Abstract

This study entitled “An Integer Linear Programming Approach in Teacher - Subject Assignment of Del Pilar Academy (DELPA), Imus, Cavite” was conducted to minimize the out - of - field teachers a ssigned to subjects offered by DELPA. The researchers used two models for the whole study. Integer Linear Programming (ILP) was used to determine the minimum number of teachers that can accommodate all the sections and subjects offered by DELPA, which is t he first objective of the study. This programming model was also used to find an optimal teacher - subject assignment that will maximize the teachers’ credit factor value, which is the second objective of the study. This credit factor are numbers used to det ermine the values of assigning teacher to a particular subject, ranging from zero to five, with five being the highest and zero being the lowest. This is used to determine the level of efficiency of a teacher to teach a specific subject. This credit factor was based on teachers’ educational attainment. Thus, teachers who have higher educational attainment or qualifications to teach a certain subject are likely to have a higher credit factor, and there is a bigger chance that they will have more loads compar ed to others. All decision variables in the first objective should be integer and binary (0 or 1) for the second objective. The study was conducted during the AY 2014 - 2014 in Del Pilar Academy (DELPA), a school in Imus, Cavite. Thus, all data and informati on gathered for this study was according to the said academic year. The researchers had an interview with the principal and relevant files were obtained from the HR’s file. The data that was gathered were the total number of teachers, number of classes per section, subjects per year level, and teachers’ educational attainment and workloads. The researchers then created an ILP model for the first and second objectives using all the information gathered. The result shows that the minimum number of teachers t hat DELPA should have is 36, while the existing number of teachers in DELPA is 40, therefore, the existing number of teachers is enough to accommodate all the sections and subjects offered by the school. The proposed teacher - subject assignment had a total credit factor of 1169, which is 147 higher compared to current assignment of DELPA. Hence, the new assignment was more in - line to the field of expertise of the teachers. This study will help the administration of DELPA decide whether to change the teachers ’ assignments or stick to the current assignment. The study can also be a tool in the proper allocation of their teachers in the different subjects. It will help allocate teachers based on their mastery on a specific subject. This will also give he admini stration an idea on how many sections can further be opened.
