Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the effect of crude extracts of Strongylodon macrobotrys flowers and leaves against enteric pathogens. Selected species of Gram-negative enteric bacteria were isolated from compost and mussels. Preliminary screening was done to determine the inhibitory effect of the extracts on enteric bacteria. Growth response of the isolated enteric bacteria subjected to the extracts was determined using Mixed Culture Assay and the Miles and Misra method of viable count. Results showed that the crude extracts of S. macrobotrys flowers and leaves were able to inhibit the isolated Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri, and Vibrio cholerae. The extracts showed a significant effect (p < 0.05) on the growth of the pathogens studied. It was also observed that the flower extract is better (p < 0.05) than the leaf extract in controlling the growth of the bacteria. We conclude that the crude extracts of Strongylodon macrobotrys flowers and leaves have an inhibitory effect on Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri, and Vibrio cholerae.
