Abstract
ABSTRACT NAME OF INSTITUTION: De La Salle University- Dasmariñas ADDRESS: Dasmariñas Bagong Bayan Area-C, Dasmariñas, Cavite TITLE: Sex, IQ and Handedness as Correlates of Personality AUTHORS: Barrera, Daisy B. Jaurigue, Vanessa Joi V, FUNDING SOURCE: Parents COST: Php 14, 000 DATE STARTED: July 2006 DATE FINISHED: January 2007 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: a. Sex b. Intelligence quotient c. Handedness 2. What is the Personality profile of the respondents in terms of: a. Extraversion b. Anxiety c. Will d. Independence e. Self Control 3. Is there a significant relationship between Sex and Personality? 4. Is there a significant relationship between IQ and Personality? iii 5. Is there a significant relationship between Handedness and Personality? SCOPE AND LIMITATION: In assessing the role of sex, intelligence quotient (IQ), and handedness on one’s consistent patterns of feeling, thinking, and behaving, it is important that the limiting conditions under which be considered. The researchers used a descriptive-correlational design to know the functions of the said variables to the respondents’ personality. The respondents are from the College of Engineering and Technology and the College of Liberal Arts. This espouses and accurate and balanced ratio of left-handed and right-handed individuals that are of different sexes and intelligence quotient. Their IQ, writing-hand preference, and personality are measured through standardized tests. Test materials used were the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (short form), which tests and clarifies the writing- hand preference of the respondents, MD5 Mental Ability Test, which assesses one’s intelligence quotient, and 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (The Global Factors), which determines the dimensions of personality of an individual. The study focuses on the Global Personality factors found in 16PF, specifically on Extraversion, Anxiety, Will/Tough- iv Mindedness, Independence, and Self Control. Since these are valid determinants of the broad dimensions of personality. Researchers cover the role of sex, intelligence quotient, and handedness in the biological perspective, in relation to the brain organization and biological factors of the respondents. METHODOLOGY: The researchers employed the Descriptive-Correlational Design in order to know the magnitude and direction of the relationships between the following variables: Sex; IQ; and, Handedness of an individual. Descriptive Correlational Design is used to obtain, explain, and associate results. The results of the tests are co-elected and explain the personality profile of the respondents. The design helps the researchers know the relationship between the variables, which are the respondents’ sex, IQ level, and writing-hand preference, to relate the degree of relationship to the respondents’ personality. This predicts the outcome of the study through the tests from which information and results were obtained. MAJOR FINDINGS/CONCLUSIONS: Through this research, it is ascertained that Sex has no significant relationship with Personality and Sex has no significant relationship with Extraversion. As illustrated in the findings of this study, though in small percentage, females intend to be more sociable, since men worry less about others and are less willing to seek for help. Likewise, sex is not a v significant factor in determining the anxiety level of both men and women. However, women are more fearful than men. Results show that both sexes have the tendencies to be anxious on certain things. Sex is not an indication of an individual’s strength of character. Males and females tend to be both intuitive and unempathic. There may be instances that females intend to be more intuitive than men, yet, personality varies due to other factors. Being a male or a female is found to be a determinant of being independent. Although expressed in small frequency, men are independent while females are more selfless and agreeable; they tend to depend on others in certain instances. Men often seek conflicts and are aggressive which explains of their inability to sustain self-control. Women usually express negative emotions that show low self-control. Nevertheless, the differences are due to the insignificant relationship between the variables. Also, IQ was found out to have no strong significant relationship with personality. When extraversion is concerned, findings show that IQ or mental capacities may not affect the introvertness or extravertness of a person. Though it was stated that higher test scores can be affected by time pressure, extraverts benefit from shorter timed tests than introverts. As to anxiety, respondents with higher IQ scores tend to manifest low anxiety level. Thus, IQ of an individual is not a determinant of one’s level of anxiety. Tough-Mindedness and IQ are insignificantly correlated. vi Openness has no significant relationship with the ability of an individual to reason and process the information. Being intuitive or tough-minded can be associated with other environmental factors such as family upbringing, religion, and socio-economic status. IQ is an insignificant determinant of independence of an individual. People with low IQ may not always be dependent to other people because they would want to strive harder. On the other hand, this may be contrary to individuals with higher IQ. Results show insignificant relationship between Self-Control and IQ. This statement likewise, parallels to various studies of the same nature, which slant the negative relationship among existing variables. There is no significant relationship between Handedness and Personality. However, with a small percentage, the ratio show that the right-handed individuals are more extrovert than the left-handed individuals because for the right handed individuals, the left hemisphere is the one responsible for extraversion. It was contrary to the left-handed people who are proven introvert. Thus, such findings do not parallel to the literature of this study. The findings suggest that both left and right-handed individuals are prone to anxiety. Though resulted in a small percentage, the right-handed individuals are more intuitive then the left-handed people contrary to the literature that left-handers are more intuitive. The findings suggest that they are more independent compared to the former, because they have higher spatial skills though as a whole it can not predict a vii significance between the two variables. Handedness has nothing to do with self-control. However, in a small frequency data, the left-handed individuals have low self-control than the right-handed individuals which is true and consistent to the gathered literature, those individuals whose right brain dominates in different biological activities, have less self-control. RECOMMENDATIONS: The following are the researchers’ recommendations: 1. The individuals must be aware of differences and limitations of the people around them. 2. The individuals must respect one’s capabilities regardless of sex, IQ level, and hand preference. 3. Parents must orient themselves of their children’s abilities. 4. Teachers must consider their students’ capabilities and understand their needs. 5. Future researchers may replicate this study by including other variables that are not included in this paper.
