Abstract
ABSTRACT Title: Attitudes of Public and Private Secondary School Teachers towards K-12 Basic Education Program Name of institution: De La Salle University - Dasmariñas Authors: Danica Brofar, Jullien Ann Egangan, and Joyce Karlan Pike Funding Source: Parents Cost: 10,000 Date Started: June 2012 Date Completed: March 2013 This study determined the attitude of public and private secondary school teachers toward the newly implemented basic education program specifically in Trece Martires City, Cavite. The researchers used self-made questionnaires, validated by two Behavioral Sciences faculty members and three Professional Education faculty members, intended to reveal the attitudes of the respondents in terms of beliefs, feelings, and behavior. The respondents of the study are 30 public and 30 private secondary school teachers from Trece Martires City, Cavite. The results revealed that the public and private school teachers have a positive attitude towards K-12 basic education program in terms of beliefs, feelings, and behavior. On the other hand, it was also revealed that there is no significant difference between the attitude of public and private school teachers in terms of beliefs and feelings but shows a significant difference when it comes to their behavior with tobt of 2.460 and tcrit of 2.0010 which is higher at α 0.05. Therefore, it is revealed that public and private school teachers both have positive attitude but differ in terms of behavior. This study shed light to the readers, school administrators, government, students, parents, and teachers themselves to know the attitude of public and private school educators toward the K-12 basic education program on the first year of its implementation. Objectives General The researchers determined the attitudes of private and public secondary school teachers toward K-12 Basic Education Program. Specific 1. What is the level of attitudes of public and private secondary school teachers toward K-12 Basic Education Program in terms of: a. Beliefs b. Feelings c. Behavior 2. Is there a significant difference in the attitudes off public and private secondary school teachers toward K-12 Basic Education Program in terms of: a. Beliefs b. Feeling c. Behavior Scope and Limitation K-12 basic educational program is new in the Philippine educational setting. The study on the attitude of teachers toward K-12 is a breakthrough on Filipino setting, the reason why local literatures and studies on teachers and K-12 was seen by the researchers as inadequate. The insufficiency of the literature gathered by the researchers was not a hindrance to support the study because the study was dependent on the results gathered through survey. The objectives of the study are to know the following: (a) attitudes of the teachers in terms of beliefs, feelings and behavior, and (b) if there is a significant difference on the attitudes of private and public secondary school teachers towards K-12 basic education program in terms of beliefs, feelings and behavior. To measure the attitude of the public and private secondary school teachers toward K-12 basic education program, the researchers made use of self-made questionnaire and interpreted through a 4 point likert scale. The respondents of the study were thirty (30) public and thirty (30) private school teachers from Trece Martires City. The researchers considered Dasmarinas City since it is more convenient for the researchers but the City has been a research site of many schools for the past years. Major Findings 1. Both Private and Public school teachers gain a positive attitude in term of: a. Beliefs Private Schools: 3.23 Public Schools: 3.05 b. Feelings Private Schools: 2.74 Public Schools: 2.68 c. Behavior Private Schools: 3.18 Public Schools: 2.97 2. There is no significant difference in the attitudes of public and private school teacher in terms of Beliefs t (58) = 1.776, p > 0.05 and Feelings t(58) = .617, p>0.05, while there is significant difference in terms of Behavior t (58)= 2.4597, p<.05. Conclusion 1. Both public and private schools have similar views with attitudes of Positive signifying the teachers found the program good for the educational system but also found the program precipitated and lacking. 2. There is no significant difference in attitudes of public and private school teacher in terms of Beliefs and Feelings while the result in Behavior is otherwise. The researchers therefore conclude that the teachers still believe that the new educational program is beneficial for their students and shows in their behavior. However, they feel the gaps and inadequacy of comprehensive training, orientation, physical facility and learning and teaching material which should be accounted for. Recommendations Based on the outcome of the study, the researchers recommend the following: Secondary School Teachers. They should maintain their positive attitudes; and be able to adapt to the newly implemented curriculum. The study reveals that both public and private school teachers have positive attitudes in terms of their beliefs, feelings and behaviors toward the K-12 Education Program. Therefore, with their openness to change, they can improve their classroom management, teaching techniques and skills by attending seminars, orientations and trainings about the newly implemented educational program. This will help encourage students to study and improve their academic performance which is a strong basis of effectiveness of the K-12 Basic Education Program. School Administrators/ Supervisors. They should provide brief orientations, seminars and trainings for their teachers as an overview about the K-12 Education Program. As the study shows trainings, orientations and seminars are needed to keep them in track with the new program. Therefore, they are able to keep on track in incorporating the important lessons and focus on the goals of the K-12 Basic Education Program as the teachers exert their best efforts in serving the quality of education to the students. Government. The study shows that the government should embark with effective measures to lessen the burdens of the new educational system. The researchers recommend that they should add more comprehensive trainings, seminars and orientations about K-12 Basic Education Program that will discuss the areas that need to be improved in the skills, techniques and classroom management of the teachers. The physical facilities should be also improved and proper distribution of teaching and learning materials must be given ahead of time. Future researchers. This study will be helpful for future researchers which have the similar notion of research. The researchers suggest focusing on the professors of universities who will be also affected by the implementation of K-2 Basic Education Program and might as well add more variables in the study. As regards the instrument used in this study; the researchers recommend them to add more items in the questionnaire and consider the use of other instruments like interview for more essential gathering of information.
