Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Communication Strategies of Other Exceptional Children towards Children with Autism Author: Benedict V. Victa Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 10,000.00 Date Started: July 2008 Date Ended: February 2009 Objectives of the Study General To find out various communication strategies of other exceptional children, such as children with cerebral palsy, children with mental retardation and children with ADHD, towards children with autism. Specific 1. What is the profile of the participants in terms of A. age; B. gender; C. years of stay in the special school; and D. type of disability? 2. What are the various communication strategies used by other special children to autistic children? Scope and Limitation This study was conducted among the slow learners or children with disabilities. The study included 11 exceptional learners: 6 autistic children, regardless of their spectrum. The remaining 5 are from other kind of disability, such as children with mental retardation, ADHD, Down syndrome and etc. With this number of respondents, the researcher visualized more than 20 communications. To limit the study, all special children, except those with ASD, ages 5 to 18 years old were observed in the classes and other times that involved interactions, such as break period or their play time in the school. However, only those who were permitted by the parents or teachers took part in the study. This study obtained a profile limited to age, gender and year of stay, and the communication strategies of special children towards autistic children found during the conduct of research. In this case participations of SPED teachers were expected; they were asked about their opinions and observations about the said topic. However, it was only limited to the full consent of teachers who were interviewed. Methodology The research reported in this paper was a descriptive study, which is the best design that suits to gather data. This is done through observation and measurement with out manipultaion, a behavior and its possible influences (Heiman, 1999). In this particular study, one effective method and perhaps the most vulnerable design to use is the observation (Elmes, Kantowitz & Roediger, 2003). The researcher sat in during the class and did the observation. Another method used to gather data was by test administration, then an interview with the teachers. Findings Based on the findings of the study, the following were drawn: 1) Most of the participants were aged 11-12 and 15-16. 2) There were 11, out of 19 possible communication strategies found, namely Shared Activities, Supportive Behaviors, Emotional Disclosure, Direct Inquiry, Impression Management, Gift Giving, Assistance from Others, Teasing, Adjusting Behaviors, Complying Behaviors, and Pretending Behaviors. Conclusions Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that 1. Exceptional children with disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, are still capable of communicating using several strategies. 2. Low percentage of communication strategies are exhibited by the exceptional children compared to normal individuals. Recommendations The following recommendations are offered in view of the findings in chapter IV of the study: 1. The exceptional children should be exposed to more activities that will enhance their social skills. 2. Along with the recommendation of social skills, the SPED teachers and school administrators are encouraged to come up with a program, such as seminars and workshops, involving awareness to regular children, parents and guardians. 3. The community should promote activities involving the enhancement of communication of exceptional children. 4. Future researchers should study more about the communicating behaviors of the other exceptional learners, this time, they may include various types of disability such as Down syndrome, children with speech deficiency, and even the communication strategies of children with autism to another.
