Abstract

ABSTRACT NAME OF INSTITUTION: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas ADDRESS: Dasmariñas Bagong Bayan Area – C, Dasmariñas, Cavite TITLE: The Demographic Profile of Selected Maternal Inmates of Cavite Provincial Jail and Its Implication to Their Resiliency Level AUTHORS: Ambion, Diane V. Manansala, Auralyn D. Pudadera, Mark Angelo T. FUNDING SOURCE: Parents COST: Php 10,000 DATE STARTED: July 2007 DATE FINISHED: January 2008 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: 1. What is the demographic profile of the selected maternal inmates of Cavite Provincial Jail in terms of: a. age - 7 - b. marital status c. educational attainment d. length of stay in jail? 2. What is the resiliency level of the selected maternal inmates of Cavite Provincial Jail? 3. Is there a relationship between demographic profile and resiliency level of selected maternal inmates of Cavite Provincial Jail? SCOPE AND DELIMITATION: In assessing the relationship of demographic profile and resiliency level, it was important that the limiting conditions under which be considered. The researchers utilized a descriptive – correlational design to determine the relationship of the independent variable and dependent variable. The respondents were the selected maternal inmates of Cavite Provincial Jail whose sentence was from five months to seven years. There was no age and status were set. The resiliency levels of selected maternal inmates were measured through devised resiliency test. The said test - 8 - was composed of forty – five (45) items which were divided as follows: fifteen items (15) for self – perception, fifteen items (15) for family and children relationship and fifteen items (15) for social support. METHODOLOGY: The researchers employed the descriptive – correlational design to know the relationship of demographic profile and resiliency level. Descriptive – correlational design was utilized to obtain, explain and associate results. The results of the test were correlated and clarify the demographic profile of the respondents. The design helped the researchers know the relationship between the variables demographic profile and resiliency level of selected maternal inmates. This predicts the outcome of the study through the tests from which information and results were obtained. MAJOR FINDINGS/CONCLUSION: Through this research, it is ascertained that there is significant relationship with between demographic profile such - 9 - as age, marital status and length of stay in jail and resiliency level. There is a significant relationship between resiliency level and age. It is due to the experiences in life of selected maternal inmates who acquire enough learning to overcome those problems they experiencing at the moment and having positive characteristics and attitude helps them to cope with life’s adversities. Another reason maybe is that the perception of their self and their perspective of the individual are stronger, cooperative and confident in handling and solving problems in life. There is significant relationship between resiliency level and marital status. It is because having someone can rely on, can really help in handling problems. The more a person feels loved and supported by significant others, the more she builds positive emotions and becomes strong for the sake of her family and children. And it is true that without someone who can accompany a person the more likely to have lack of identity and feels worthless. - 10 - There is significant relationship between resiliency level and length of stay in jail. It is because an individual who spends life for a place for so long would learn how to adjust and adapt to the present situation and environment in. In addition, a person can cope up and adjust to present situation when possessed with harmony and familiarization with the rules, policies, regulation and less harmful daily living of a place. However, there is no significant relationship between resiliency level and educational attainment. The learnings outside the formal schooling can help an individual to cope up with problems encountered. Another possible reason is that home school and experiences build a positive and enough personality for an individual to handle encountered problems she may encounter. It is not enough to be well – educated and having high expectations for one self to say that you’re a resilient person. RECOMMENDATION: The following are the researcher’s recommendations: - 11 - 1) For maternal and other inmates to adjust and cope effectively to the new challenges, situations and environment, they should learn how to balance their emotions. 2) Significant others like family, children and peers are encourage to show love, care and support to the maternal inmates by through regular visits them or and active communication. 3) The concerned individuals like community psychologists must plan and organize programs that would help the maternal inmates to learn, to accept, and adjust to their new situation. 4) Future researchers are encouraged to conduct interviews with the respondents to gather ore information about their resiliency level, conduct a study about the resiliency level of minors, female, and male inmates in different municipal jail inside and outside Cavite to be aware how resilient they are; conduct more study to fill up the research gap about female inmates.
