ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Bagong Bayan, Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: The Relationship of Online Chatting on Sexual Promiscuity among Gay Men Authors: Lontoc, Edward Penesa, Mary Frances Peñas, Joyce Ann Funding Source: Parents Cost: 3,000.00 Date Started: August 2006 Date Finished: February 2007 Objectives of the Study General The purpose of this study is to identify the reasons why gays get promiscuous with the people they meet online that soon filter for a date. In addition, this study will determine if getting promiscuous increases the likeliness of their online chatting. Specific 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of a. Age b. Educational Background c. Occupation 4 2. What is the level of the respondent’s sexual self-image? 3. What is the respondents’ frequency when it comes to online chatting? 4. What is the respondents’ frequency when it comes to levels of promiscuity? 5. Is there a significant relationship between online chatting and promiscuity of gay men? SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study focused on gay men who consider online chatting as a habit or form of pastime already. Their sexual promiscuity and use of online chatting would be tackled in this research. This study did not deal on gays who are only involved in online sex, since, there is no actual physical contact with the other person. The age of the respondents ranges from 18-30 years old. Methodology To determine the relationship of online-chatting on sexual promiscuity among selected gay, descriptive correlational method was used. To test the levels of sexual promiscuity and frequency of online use, self-made questionnaires were used. The respondents are selected through purposive sampling. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to ensure that the data is correct and accurate. 5 Findings 1. Majority of the respondents were ages eighteen (18) to twenty (20) years old, study showed or 36.67 percent. Most common ages are twentyone (21) to twenty-three (23) years old; this obtains half of the respondents or 40 percent of the respondents. The least common ages which are twenty-four (24) to twenty-six (26) attained 10 percent and (27) twenty-seven to (29) twenty-nine are the remaining 13.33 percent. The respondents are mostly undergraduates (21) twenty-one which covered 63.33 percent. College degree graduates, (11) eleven of them, acquired 36.67 percent. Moreover the frequency of unemployed which is (19) nineteen, obtained 36.67 percent, and the remaining are the employed gay men, (11) eleven of them obtained 63.33 percent. 2. Most of the respondents scored very high with the 66.67 percent while 3.33 percent obtained very low scores on Sexual Self-Image Checklist. 3. The frequency distribution revealed the online chatting habits of the respondents. Half of the respondents had a high level frequency of online chatting that scores seventy-five to one hundred (75-100). Nine (9) respondents had moderate levels of frequency with scores of fifty to seventy-four (50-74). Five (5) respondents obtained scores between twenty-five to fourty-nine (25-49) which lead to a low frequency level. And lastly, the score between zero to twenty-four (0-24) had one (1) respondent that led to a very low frequency level. It seems that most of the respondents frequently go on-line to chat with other people three (3) to four (4) hours a day. Nine (9) respondents with moderate level, mean that the respondents may go on-line for a number of times but is significantly lower than the first category. Precisely 6 that would occur from two (2) to three (3) hours a day. The low frequency level means that the respondents seldom go online. This may be due to factors such as time, proximity and availability. Only one (1) respondent got a very low level, which means that the respondents go on-line only if necessary or if there is a considerable amount of free time to do less important things. 4. The high frequency suggests that the respondents are frequently thinking of having sex with other people. The moderate frequency implies that the respondents may think to have sex with other people for a number of times but is significantly lower than the first category and approximately would be from two to three days. A low frequency acquired means that the respondents seldom think to have sex with other people. This may be due to factors such as time and proximity. A very low frequency attained indicates that the respondents may think to have sex with the other people only if there is considerable amount of free time to do less important things. 5. There is a significant relationship between online chatting and sexual promiscuity since the t-test revealed a t-value of 5.626 which is greater than the t-critical value of 2.048 at 5 percent level of significance and Degree of Freedom = 28. Conclusion Based on the results and findings obtained in this study, the following conclusions are drawn: 7 1. The majority of Gay men are under the age of eighteen to twenty. Most of the respondents were undergraduate and unemployed. 2. Most of the respondents’ score are very high on Sexual Self-Image Checklist. Respondents who scored high or very high may feel a low level of control in their sexual relationships. High-discrepancy scorers also report high level of concern about being rejected sexually, as well as a strong fear of commitment in their sexual relationships. 3. It seems that most of the respondents frequently go on-line to chat with other people three (3) to four (4) hours a day. Nine (9) respondents or 30 percent got moderate level, which mean that the respondents may go on-line for a number of times but is significantly lower than the first category. That would precisely occur from two (2) to three (3) hours a day. 4. When it comes to online chatting, the highest number of respondents attained a moderate frequency level. It means that with a percentage of 46.67, the respondents obtaining scores of 50-74 would think of having sex for a number of two to three days only. Those days are considerably lower as to that of the high frequency. The levels of promiscuity increase as the frequency of online chatting increases. 5. There is a significant relationship between online-chatting and sexual promiscuity among gay men, since the computed value for t was greater than the value of t-critical. 8 Recommendation: This section presents specific recommendations addressed to particular conclusions of this study: Future researchers. They need more respondents to broaden up the perspectives and further emphasize the findings of thirty respondents and to improve its validity. Also needs a more comprehensive tool in measuring the respondent’s sexual attitudes. Heterosexuals. should also be included for comparison. Gay Men. They should be more aware of the risks entailed in their sexual impulse and sexual indulgence offline. Parents. should understand the situation of their gay child and learn to be open with their children, so that they will be able to build their self-esteem. College Teachers. They should have proper knowledge of teaching about self-acceptance. They should go into the gay’s world to develop a harmonious relationship. The researchers also recommend a more comprehensive tool in measuring the respondent’s sexual attitudes.
