ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: “The Perceived Effect of Birth Order on Need for Achievement and Goal Orientation Among Selected Student Leaders in DLSU-D CSO-RSO, SY 2006- 2007†Total No. Of pages: 85 Authors: Joefhelyn R. Balidoy Russell S. Roque Funding source: parents and OJT allowance Cost: Date started: June 2006 Date Finished: February 2006 Objective of the study A. General: To determine the perceived effect of birth order on need for achievement and goal orientation among selected student leaders in DLSU-D CSO RSO. B. Specific: 1. To determine the demographic profile of the selected DLSU-D students in terms of: a) Age b) Sex c) Position (Organization) d) Birth Order e) Course f) Family size 2. To determine the level of need for achievement of the student leaders, as it is indicated with personal mastery, competitive excellence and motivation anxiety, considering their birth order when grouped according to: a. Eldest b. Middle c. Youngest d. Only child 3. To determine the level of goal orientation of the student leaders, as it is indicated with goal- directedness, considering their birth order when grouped according to: a. Eldest b. Middle c. Youngest d. Only child 4. To determine the relationship between need for achievement and goal orientation? 5. To determine the perceived effect of birth order on: a. Need for Achievement b. Goal Orientation Scope and Limitation The study is only limited to the discussion of the perceived effects of birth order on the following variables: goal orientation and need for achievement, as well as the relationship of these variables. Selected forty student leaders in Council of Student Organization (CSO) and Recognize Student Organization (RSO), with designated position in the student organization as respondents of the study ages 16-26, considering their gender, birth order, course, position in the organization and family size. Motivational Trait Questionnaire will be used to measure the individual’s achievement motivation and How Goal- Directed are you Test to measure his/her goal orientation. Other areas not discussed and mentioned is not included in the study. Methodology The researchers selected the student leaders of De La Salle UniversityDasmarinas Council of Student Organization (CSO) –Recognized Student Organization (RSO) as the respondents with the used of simple random sampling for they best suit the nature of their study as it will look upon the levels of need for the achievement and goal orientation of individuals. The researchers used standardized tests to measure the need for achievement and goal orientation of the selected student leaders. How Goal- Directed are you Test (HGDT) is the name of the test that measures individuals’ goal orientation. Indicated with goal-directedness, as to be described with high organization having the effective use of planning to achieve goals. Motivational Trait Questionnaire (MTQ) was used to measure the person’s achievement motivation with indications of personal mastery determined by other referenced goals and competition seeking; and motivation anxiety determined by worry and emotionality. The mentioned determinants are evidences, which demonstrate relevant relationship of MTQ with personality measures. The study used one way between ANOVA in evaluating the perceived effect of birth order on need for achievement and goal orientation. through comparing the differences among treatment means Whereas Pearson ProductMoment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to estimate the relationship between need for achievement and goal orientation. Major Findings  The demographic profile of the student leaders were gathered and discussed, including their ordinal position in the family or birth order are the main concern in this study.  Result of the assessment arrived with the conclusion that student leaders were high in their need for achievements and above average in their goal orientation with no regards on their birth order.  Furthermore, the relationship of need for achievement and goal orientation was evaluated with the use of Pearson’s r and it appeared that they do not have significant relationship at same point (r = 0.145; p = 1.645).  Whereas, in computing the perceived effect of birth order on need for achievement and goal orientation, one-way between ANOVA was used. Result shown that birth order had no significant perceived effect on need for achievement (F = 0.73; p = 2.86) and goal orientation (F = 0.27; p = 2.86). Other factors and moderators of the said variables were mentioned in the study to be considered in explaining individuals’ personalities and actions. Conclusion Based from the findings of the study, it could be concluded that:  Out of the forty respondents, most of them fell under the adolescence or young adult age, there are equal number of male and female. The majority came from the position of being vice president and the least came from business manager and auditor with the same number as the other. Youngest children filled the largest number of the respondents while there are only little number of only children. As appeared, many came from the CLA and only some came from COE. And it was observed that most of them are from small families than large families.  Derived from the assessment measured by the Motivational Trait Questionnaire (MTQ) determining the personal mastery which entails the desire of an individual to learn and the mastery goals; competitive excellence determined by other referenced goals and competition seeking; and motivation anxiety attributed by worry and emotionality. Result showed that all of the student leaders regardless of their birth order are high in need for achievement.  With the use of How Goal Directed are you Test (HGDT), the levels of goal orientation of the respondents were measured indicative of there being goal directed. Results concluded that all of the student leaders are above average on goal orientation regardless of their birth order.  As appeared in the findings, need for achievement has weak relationship on goal orientation and vice versa. Other factors were named and identify to provide sufficient explanation that they are not directly and strongly connected.  Factors such as ability, commitment, feedback, tasks complexity, and situational constraint were recognized to be the moderators of strength of the relationship between goal and action. As well as the types of learned covert responses namely the affective, conceptual, purposive, instrumental and evaluative, where the person need for achievement vary.  Consistently, birth order showed no perceived effect on goal orientation and need for achievement. It can be noted that it might be very complex to distinguish the precise effect of the birth order. Recommendation Based from the findings of the study, the following recommendations were raised by the researchers:  For the student leaders, they just have to continue the good behavior and attitude towards their work particularly on being goal oriented and soaring for more achievements.  Guidance and Counseling Office should launch and promote programs and seminars that will help the students to be more aware on the importance of being goal oriented and in achieving something.  Student Leaders and Guidance Counselors should coordinate with each other for further discussion and information on how they can be a good leader.  Council of Student Organization (CSO) could promote an organization that will help and assist them develop strong dedication and motivation towards their work and responsibilities.  Also, the school could promote activities and programs that will encourage students to be goal oriented and future achievers.  Future researchers could conduct a thorough study that will determine the other factors not identified in the study that can affect need for achievement and goal-orientation.  Future researchers could change the used design in the study and even have more respondents to come up with another assessment of the said effect of birth order.
