Abstract
This study investigated whether single parent homes have an effect on adolescent's emotional intelligence. Data was collected from adolescents aged 16-24 years old (N=80) using demographic questionnaire and self-report instrument called Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory-Short Version. An independent-samples T-Test was conducted to evaluate the data and the results show no significant difference, t(67)=.940,p<0.05,d=0.26 (small effect). It also indicates that both groups are on the Very Low level of Emotional Intelligence. This may be explained because when the parents leave, relatives and grandparents step in and guide the children. It does not matter who looks after the children as long as the needs of the children met especially their emotional needs. In addition, the non significance in the results may also be attributed to the fact that Emotional Intelligence can be learned and improved over time.
