Abstract

This study focused and examined the correlation of parent-child relationship to the personality traits of identical twins. It utilized correlational method to see if there is a relationship between parent-child relationship to the personality traits of 31 pairs of identical twins aged 13 to 20. In order to gather respondents for the study, purposive sampling technique was used. Parental Attachment Questionnaire by Maureen Kenny (1987) was used to collect data about the parent-child relationship and 50-item Set of IPIP Big-Five Markers by Lewis Goldberg (1992) was used to measure the Big-Five personality traits of the participants. The results of the study showed that the relationship quality between adolescent identical twins and their parents revealed slight impact on its relationship to their personality traits. With regard to the gender of the participants, it showed that there were different correlations between male and female identical twins. These findings clarified the nature of gender differences in personality and highlight the treatment or relationship of their parents towards them. The conclusion can be drawn that the relationship between parents and their identical twins must still be considered and maintained especially when the child is on the adolescent stage of their life so that a continuous influence on the development of the adolescence may occur. Over all, even though the findings showed little relationship between parent-child relationship and personality traits of identical twins, parents’ must not underestimate their own influence as compared with friends and peers of their adolescent child.
