Abstract

The main objective of the study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of leaf crude extract of Solanum melongena, Solanum lycopersicum and Capsicum annuum against the selected gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The microorganisms tested were: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi and Eschericia coli. Antibacterial assay of crude extracts were compared to know which would exhibit inhibition against selected bacteria using the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of each leaf crude extract by disc diffusion method in Mueller-Hinton Broth. The antibacterial effect of leaf crude extract of Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum melongena, did not inhibit the growth of the four representative bacteria while Capsicum annuum possess an inhibitory effect against gram positive bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Capsicum annuum against both the gram positive bacteria which are, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis is 10mg/ml. Growth of bacteria were observed in the diluted concentration starting from 40mg/ml to 5mg/ml except in the 10mg/ml concentration.
