Abstract

Some 100 scientists have declared the Philippines as the world’s "center of marine biodiversity" because of its vast species of marine and coastal resources. It has the richest concentration of marine life on the entire planet. Pansipit River is just one of the thousands of coastal resources in the Philippines which shares many unique biota. Large proportion of the estuarine habitat's biodiversity is found in the benthic community, where this so called macrobenthos live. Macrobenthos are considered to have a significant function in our ecosystem, they serve as the middlemen in aquatic food chain. However, they are easily affected by the physicochemical condition of the water and substrate. For this reason, this study about the correlation of the abundance of macrobenthos and the physicochemical characteristics of Pansipit River was conducted. Collection of macrobenthos, water samples and substrate samples were done, identification of macrobenthos was done and the determination of the physicochemical characteristics of the river was done through the use of reliable instruments. In order to get the correlation between the abundance of macrobenthos and the physicochemical characteristics of Pansipit River, Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used. There are 8 species of macrobenthos identified which includes Thiara tuberculata crebra with the highest relative abundance, followed by Corbicula striatella, Melanoides maculata, Thiara winteri, Parreysia andersoniana, Varuna litterata, Neritina pulligera and Clithon corona which has the least abundance. Pansipit River contains highest percentage of gravel content. The temperature of the river is slightly above the maximum limit of DENR. The water pH is basic. The hardness of water is very hard. The average nitrate content of water is 1.5ppm. The average phosphate content of water is 17.5ppm. The average TDS is 1.12mg/L. The DO is very low. The substrate pH is slightly basic. Generally, the nitrate content on Pansipit River is low. On the other hand, phosphate content is medium. The computed correlation of the physicochemical characteristics does not show any high correlation with the abundance of macrobenthos. The water pH, water hardness, water phosphate content and substrate pH, each of these has slight correlation with the abundance of macrobenthos. In terms of water temperature and dissolved oxygen, each of these has low correlation with the abundance of macrobenthos; and for the water nitrate content and total dissolved solids, each has moderate correlation with the abundance of macrobenthos.
