Abstract

Heavy metals such as lead are capable of contaminating the environment, and are known to be toxic to health. Lead can be present in the air and in varying amounts in food. The objective of this study is to measure the concentration of lead per sample of egg yolk collected from three sites of interest; Binakayan, Bacoor; Balubad II, Silang; and Brgy. Luis Aguado, Trece Martirez City, Cavite. These three sites are characterized as being rural and urban areas, and one that has a hazardous waste facility. The eggs served as biodeterminants for lead contamination. The researchers used the simple random sampling for the gathering of the eggs. Nine egg samples were collected per site for quantitative lead testing. The egg yolk samples were analyzed using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. There was no significant amount of lead present in the yolk samples that could have been toxic to public health. The results conclude that the eggs were safe for human consumption because they have not reached the threshold that is toxic to health. It also indicates that lead contamination present in the environment was not however damaging.
