Abstract

The study determined the antimicrobial activity of the crude extracts of Adenium obesum leaf, flower and stem against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans, using the Kirby-bauer method. The results showed that the leaf extract of Adenium obesum inhibited only the Gram-negative E. coli by an average of 10.7mm. The stem extract exhibited inhibitory effect against both Gram-positive S. aureus by 9mm and Gram-negative E. coli by 21mm which exceeded that of the antibiotic standard (18mm) used as positive control (chloramphenicol). Using the flower extract, the Gram-positive S. aureus was inhibited by 24mm at its 75% concentration, which exceeded that of the antibiotic standard (18mm) used as positive control (ampicillin). The Gram-negative E. coli was inhibited in an average of 10.3mm, but the fungi C. albicans was not inhibited by any of the flower extract concentrations. Among the three extracts from Adenium obesum plant parts, the flower extract had the most effective antimicrobial activity. Further study on the active components of the flower extract is, therefore, recommended.
