Abstract

The study evaluates the abundance of Teredo navalis and its relation to its physico-chemical properties of mangrove ecosystem in Calatagan, Batangas. A transect-belt method was used to perform this research. This research was performed at Calatagan, Batangas “Ang Pulo”. It took three months of sampling to collect and to know the abundance of Teredo navalis and the abundance of mangroves. The physico-chemical of the mangroves ecosystem in Calatagan, Batangas “Ang Pulo” was also collected for it to know the relationship with the number of Teredo navalis. On the result, all sampling months had different numbers of Teredo navalis, the month of December got the most number of Tamilok and mangroves. The correlation of the abundance or number of Teredo navalis with the salinity of water and number of mangroves had positive correlation, while the correlation of temperature of water and number of Teredo navalis had negative correlation. However, the species collected in Calatagan, Batangas was not Teredo navalis, but the very similar species called Bactronophorus thoracites. This species has the apophyses arising from the shelf at the junction of lobe and disc and pallets are spoonshaped with ring-like prominence at junction of the blade and stalk, while T. navalis has longer apophyses and paddle-shaped pallets.
