Abstract

Retail shellfish samples purchased from Bacoor Public Market were investigated for the occurrence of pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus species. A total of 24 isolates were collected and the suspected isolates were identified and further confirmed using standard biochemical test, Vibrio parahaemolyticus was determined in all of the samples. The bacterium’s pathogenicity was detected by conducting the Kanagawa test where almost all of the isolates inoculated in the Blood agar induced a type β- hemolysin. The highest prevalence of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus was exhibited by the samples obtained from the mussels showing 11 out of the 12 isolates induced hemolysis whereas 2 out of the 12 isolates obtained from the oyster samples did not induce hemolysis. Although only a fraction of the isolates obtained from the 24 samples purchased at the Bacoor Public Market are non-pathogenic, the high occurrence of the pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus species on the rest of the shellfish samples may pose a serious risk of a possible bacterial infection that can lead to a series of disease. Thus, proper handling and cooking of seafood can be used as a simple and economical method for reducing V. parahaemolyticus contamination in shellfishes as well as minimizing the infection associated with it out of seafood consumption.
