Abstract

The study focused on the identification and classification of phytoplankton found in a specific area of Lingayen Gulf, Bgy. Binloc, Dagupan, Pangasinan. Four collecting stations were chosen as area for phytoplankton study. Collection was done in each station once a month for a period of three months using a plankton net with a mesh size of 70 um and an opening of 0.40cm. 5% formalin was used as a fixing agent to preserve the plankton and to prevent them from the adverse effects of light and temperature changes. Identification process was done during examination under the microscope and after having each phytoplankton species photomicrographed. Results revealed 59 species of phytoplankton collected in the area of study and belongs to 4 divisions, 4 classes, 5 orders, 19 families, and 28 genera. The most dominant and abundant species in the four collecting sites were found to belong to three genera; Chaetoceros, Ceratium, Nitzchia, respectively. The abundance of phytoplankton in Lingayen Gulf indicated that the area was very productive (rich in marine organisms) because these plants are responsible for almost all the primary production in the sea where they stand as the base line of many webs in the aquatic environment.
