Abstract

Fishing is a source of food, nutrition, income, and livelihood in Barangay Labuin, the center of the fishing industry of Dulong in Pila, Laguna where residents rely solely on fishing as a source of their income. This descriptive study focused on the Productivity rate of Mirogobius lacustris (Dulong) in Barangay Labuin, Pila, Laguna specifically to identify the methods used in catching Dulong fish and to determine the relationship of socio-economic status of the community and the different factors affecting the increase or decrease in the productivity rate of dulong in Barangay Labuin, Pila, Laguna. This study would be very significant to the people in Barangay Labuin, Pila, Laguna for they would know and be aware of the present status of the lake since Mirogobius lacustris is an environment indicator of water quality. This descriptive study was done for two months from May to June, 2008. This determined the Catch per unit effort of Mirogobius lacustris (Dulong). A standard 242 questionnaires were used to determine the relationship on the socio-economic status of the fisherman on the Productivity rate of Dulong. There were two kinds of commonly used fishing method: motorized pushnet or “alawas or suro”, and drag seine or “pukot or skylab”. Catch per unit effort was used as an indicator to determine the productivity rate of Dulong in the study area. Productivity rate of Dulong in Barangay Labuin was based on the maximum catch of fishermen and their income in fishing. Thirty percent (30%) of the total fishermen were interviewed. Age, civil status, number of children, educational attainment, and fishing status are socio-economic variables that may affect the productivity rate of Dulong in Barangay Labuin. This study revealed that frequency of productivity rate of Mirogobius lacustris in Barangay Labuin, Pila, Laguna gives that the fishing status as full time or part time and educational attainment of the fishermen had a significant relationship on the productivity rate of Dulong. On the other hand, socioeconomic status like age, civil status and number of children gives no significant relationship on the Productivity rate of dulong fish. Season and climate, pollution, improper sanitation, primitive fishing techniques and illegal fishing are factors that lead to the decrease in the productivity rate of Mirogobius lacustris (dulong).
