Abstract

The study focuses on the socio-economic valuation of Maragondon River in Ternate, Cavite based on the economic activities done by the people of the seven barangays situated beside the main river body. The main beneficiaries of the river are the fishermen, oyster farmers, fish cage and fishpond operators, and the residents. Primary data were collected by conducting survey among the population with respect to the type of practice they perform while secondary data were gathered in the Municipal Office of Ternate. 492 individuals or 17.14% of the total households of the 7 barangays were interviewed for the data needed. Results showed that the fish cage operation is active only in the months of November to May Fishermen of Maragondon River have an estimated P91,432 income generated from their catch in a year while oyster farmers earn P273,933 annually. Fish cage operators, on the other hand economically benefit from the river by earning P160,000 yearly while fishpond practitioners have an estimated P75,001 yearly income. Residents earn P4,500 net benefits from the river by providing them free land to settle in. The estimated over-all socio-economic benefit from the river is P38,616,882. The future value based on the 10% discount rate in a decade is P16,377,328 All of the computed present benefits were discounted by 10% yearly to identify the projected socio-economic value of the river. For a span of ten years, the total estimated and projected socio-economic value of Maragondon River, Ternate, Cavite is P 261,012,425 equivalent to $772,337.64. Protection of Maragondon River is encouraged to promote its future value.
