Abstract

This study determined the influence of Monocystis sp. infection on the cast formation of earthworms from earthworm culture and plain soil. The collected earthworms were dissected to confirm the presence of the parasite and to determine the rate of the infection. The worms were subjected to an experimental vermiculture set-up where the castings made by earthworms were weighed for comparison. Both sources of earthworms were infected with Monocystis sp. but the cultured earthworms produced more castings compared to the plain soil earthworms. Monocytis sp. infection does not affect the degradative activity of earthworms in terms of the castings they produce.
