Abstract

This undergraduate proposal is entitled “Determination of Mercury Level in Pterygoplichthys pardalis (Janitor fish) Found in Marikina River Park”. Samples were collected at Barangay Jesus Dela Peña, Marikina City. Five samples were collected in three sampling stations. The muscles of the Pterygoplichthys pardalis were examined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry at Philippine Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry at Ateneo De Manila University to test the level of mercury. Descriptive Correlational Survey was employed as Experimental Design. Results show the average levels of mercury concentration in three stations: 1.35 for the station 1, 0.28 in the station 2, and 0.53 for the station 3. This signifies that there is a significant difference on the levels of mercury present in the muscle tissues of Pterygoplichthys pardalis in three different stations since the stations have attributes independent to each other. The weight and length of the samples are proven to be highly correlated with each other. However, there is no correlation between length, weight and mercury level.
