Abstract

The study determined the presence of coliform.s in iced tea and ftuit juices from five selected canteens within De La Salle University-Dasma.rifias using membrane filtration method. Coliform.s were also quantified using the standard plate count method and identified using IMViC test. The result showed that iced tea and fruit juices in all canteens had the presence of coliforms. Fruit juices had minimal coliform count and also with iced tea except in the two canteens which exceeded the standard total coliform count established by BF AD. The coliforms had the possible identity of Klebsiella pneumonia and Enterobacter cloacae. Presence of any of these bacteria indicates water contamination. Drinking contaminated beverages such as pre-mixed juices can cause variety of illnesses like diarrhea, urinary tract infections and respiratory illnesses. Proper sanitation and preparation of these beverages as a preventive approach to food safety by Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points is recommended and should be observed.
