Abstract

Fluoride, a chemical which serves as a component to many products in both house hold and commercial products, has the ability to produce potential harm to aquatic organisms in the Imus River. Fluoride makes its way to the river through tributaries and pipes directly pointed to the river. Imus River, classified under Class C, serves a wide range of uses for the communities surrounding it. Currently, the river's most noticeable use for the communities is that it serves as a catchment basin for most of their wates. However, unknown to many, species of nektn namely (tilapia) Oreochromis niloticus, and (cels) Anguilla bengalensis are harvested and sold to nearby public markets and restaurants and (kataba) Poecilia koperi are sold to pet shops. The study conducted an assessment of fluoride in the water and nekton species collected was (kataba) Poecilia koperi. Based from the study, it was found out that the fluoride content in the nekton samples different stations differed in fuoride content. The species collected in station 2 had higher fuoride content than the nekton species in station 1. The water samples were found to be affected by months and stations. Station 2 always had the highest fluoride concentration of fluoride because it was near the 2 tributatries. In terms of months, June had the highest amount of fluoride in all of the months when the study was conducted. The amount of fluoride in the water samples was high compared to the standard set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in DAO 34. The fluoride in nekton was found to be at safe levels when compared the standard set by Groth.
