Abstract

This study investigated the effects of the wild tea leaf (Carmona retusa) extract in comparison to the avocado oil (Persea americana) on the cholesterol level and gross body mass of male albino rats (Rattus norvegicus). Forty male albino rats were divided into five treatment groups. The first group, T0, served as the negative control. The rats under T1 served as the positive control which received the avocado oil, which is known to have decreased the cholesterol level. The wild tea extract was prepared in three concentrations: the 50% which was given to T2 group, 75% for the T3, and 100% pure crude extract for the T4. All rats under each treatment groups were subjected to undergo blood collection via cardiac puncture before and after administration of the extracts to determine the total cholesterol level. The weight of the test organisms was also determined. The results of the groups under the three concentrations of wild tea were statistically analyzed to determine if there was any significance. The results showed no statistically significance in the decrease of the cholesterol level. However, it was seen that rats under T3 showed a decrease in its blood cholesterol level. This decrease is suggested to be caused by the antioxidant rosmarinic acid a component of wild tea leaf.
