Abstract

This study has investigated on the overdose effect of Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) Food Supplement on the nephrophysiology of male albino mice. Forty mice were divided into four groups; the control group received no Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) Food Supplement, and the other groups were treated with diluted Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) Food Supplement with .14mg, 0.3mg and 0.4mg dosage respectively. After 30 days, the mouse‟s kidneys were extracted and subjected to histotechniques. The difference in the kidney tissues between mouse not induced with Eurycoma longifolia Food Supplement and mouse induced with Eurycoma longifolia Food Supplement show that there is a significant increase in the kidney cell count between control group and treatment group with .14mg dose of Eurycoma longifolia Food Supplement, treatment group with 0.3mg dose of Eurycoma longifolia Food Supplement and treatment group with 0.4mg dose of Eurycoma longifolia Food Supplement. In the diameter of glomerulus, the results show no significant difference between the control group and that of the treatment groups. The results also show that the kidney cell size, kidney cell form, and kidney size have significant differences between the control group and the treatment groups induced with Tongkat Ali Food Supplement. Based on the results of the study it only proves that over usage of this Herbal Food Supplement may cause damage to kidneys.
