Abstract

This study investigated the antimicrobial activity of Strongylodon macrobotrys against enteropathogenic vibrio spp . S. macrobotrys crude extract antimicrobial activity was tested against enteropathogenic vibrios using the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration. The lethal dose of the crude extract was measured by gavage feeding Mus musculus in increasing concentration of the extract. The initial and final count of vibrio when subjected to the crude extract was also counted using the viable counting method. Antimicrbial activity of the crude extract was found in high concentrations using MIC and MBC method. This indicates that the crude extract can inhibit the growth of enteropathogenic vibrios at high concentrations. It also demonstrated a low selective toxicity upon subjection of mice to crude extract. The researchers recommending observing the effect of the crude extract on the liver and kidneys, and to isolate the compounds that inhibit the growth of enteropathogenic vibrios.
