Abstract

The Effect of Catharanthus pusillus in the mitotic activity of Allium cepa, commonly known as onion was investigated. Root tips of Allium cepa were exposed with different concentrations (0.0%, 35%, 50%, and 75%) of Catharanthus pusillus crude extract. Treatment with Catharanthus pusillus crude extract lasted for two weeks. The root tips were harvested, fixed, squashed, stained, and observed using a binocular microscope. The rate of cell division was examined by means of determining the mitotic index. Mitotic index is obtained by dividing the number of cells undergoing mitosis over the total number of cells in a given population. The control (T0) has the highest value of mitotic indices which is 94% in first replicate (R1) while it has 91% in second replicate (R2). T1 got 8% in R1 and 7% in R2, T2 is 39% in R1 while 42% in R2 and T3 has a value 70% in R1 and 65% in R2. All the treatments revealed a significant increase in the mitotic index.
