Abstract
This study focused on the abundance of green algae species in relation to the physicochemical characteristics of Mamba River, Cavite during wet and dry seasons. There were a total of eight (8) green algae species collected in the area. These are Mougeotia viridis, Basicladia, chelonum, Cloteriopsis longissima, Pediastrum simplex, Scenedesmus dimorphus, Scenedesmus obliquus, Closterium sp. and Chlorococcum humicola. Most of the species identified belong to order Chlorococcales. The most abundant species in dry season is Chlorococcum humicola, while Mougeotia viridis for the wet season. These two species are constantly present in all the sampling sites. Closterium sp. is also present in all the stations but it is the least abundant species in wet and dry seasons. The abundance of green algae is correlated with the following physicochemical parameters: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), water current, phosphate, nitrate and nitrite. These have direct and indirect effects on green algae occurrence, distribution and abundance. Among the Physico-chemical parameters, current flow affects directly the abundance of green algae because its r-value is positively high while nitrogen does not display any correlation because its r-value is zero (0). This means that nitrogen does not affect the abundance of green algae in Mamba River. Temperature and pH have also high r-values but their r-values display negative correlation which indicates that there is an inverse relationship between these two parameters and the abundance of green algae species. Also, the results show that there is no significant difference between the abundance of green algae in wet and dry season.
