Is there significant relationship between the demographic profile and resiliency of sheltered street children with substance abuse history? 6. Is there a significant relationship between the variables purpose in life and resiliency? Scope and Limitation This study determined the level of purpose in life and its relation to resiliency of sheltered street children with substance-abused history. The vi researchers also aimed to measure the possible relationship existing between the two variables. The sheltered street children demographic profile was based only on age, educational attainment substance abused and family composition. These demographic profiles were only used to measure if it has a significant relationship between the variable. The respondent were mainly compose of male street children with history of substance abused, age ranging from 10 – 15. Sources of data came from the respondent’s Purpose in Life Test and Resiliency Test result. Methodology Research Design The research design used in this study was descriptive - correlational. Using the descriptive research design would intend to provide an accurate portrayal of behavior. Correlational design goal is to describe the strength of relation of two or more events or characteristics. The researchers assume that this was the most appropriate design to determine the level of purpose in life and resiliency of sheltered street children with substance abused history. Research Participants A total of thirty sheltered street children with substance abused history from an institution in Alabang, Muntinlupa City participated in this study. Purposive sampling was utilized because they had to meet specific set of vii criteria, such as knowing how to read and write and being able to understand the questions given to them. They must be under the age bracket of 10-15 years old. Through this, valid and reliable results would be possible to obtain in order to make the research dependable. Research Instrument To measure the purpose in life of the respondents, the Purpose in Life Test, developed by James C. Crumbaugh, Ph.D (1968) was utilized. The Purpose in Life Test is an attitude scale constructed from the orientation of logotherapy. This test was designed to measure their urges in life. The Purpose in Life Scale was used to test the aspect of purpose in life. This scale was based on Victor Frankl’s thesis of the meaning of life. The test was made up of 20 items rated from 1 (low/no purpose) to 7 (higher purpose). In order to measure the resiliency of the respondents, the researchers used Resiliency Test created by Al Siebert (1997). This test measured the resiliency of selected street children with substance abused history. The researchers used this test in order to know how resilient the respondents were even in times of crisis and difficulties. Resiliency Test consists of 20 items. Both tests were translated to Filipino for better comprehension. Research Procedure viii The following steps were considered to gather the necessary data. The researchers had chosen an institution from Alabang, Muntinllupa City, from which they gathered street children with substance abused history. Then the selection of appropriate test for the study was done. These tests were given to the Filipino Department to be translated into Filipino for easy comprehension of the participants. After the translation of tests, permit from Department of Social Welfare and development was secured in order to administer tests in the said institution. However, before the researchers administered the tests, a good rapport with the respondents was established through unstructured interview. Through this interview, the researchers got the demographic profile of the sheltered street children such as age, family composistion, educational attainment and substance they abused. Afterwards, the researchers validated the gathered information through the help of the social workers, who handled their files. After establishing relationship, tests were administered. Scoring and interpretation of the data followed. It was then be summarized to answer the statement of the problem. ix Summary of Findings Based on the study conducted by the researchers, the following results were gathered: 1. The majority of the respondents were thirteen (13) years of age. Nineteen (19) or about 63.3% of the respondents were grade 1 students and one (1) or about 3.3% of the respondent had attained grade 5. Twenty (20) or about 66.7% of the respondents belonged to a nuclear family and ten (10) or about 33.3% of the respondents belonged to extended family. 2. Sixteen (16) or about 53.3 % of the respondents scored above 112 which means that they had definite purpose and meaning in life. The result suggested that the respondents had clear perceptions of what kind of far-off yet potentially achievable future experience will bring about rewarding experience. While four (4) or about 13.3 % of the respondents scored below 92, which means that they lacked clear purpose. The majority of the respondents had clear meaning and purpose in life. 3. Ten (10) or about 33.3% of the respondents scored sixty-six (66) to eighty (80) which means that they were “resilient”. 0ne (1) or about 3.3% of the respondents scored under forty (40) which means that he x needed help to become resilient. Therefore, majority of the respondents were resilient. 4. There was no considerable difference in purpose in life when the respondents were grouped according to age, educational attainment, family composition and substance abused. 5. There was no significant difference in resiliency test score when the respondents were grouped according to age, educational attainment, and family composition. 6. There was no significant relationship between the resiliency test score and the purpose in life test score since the p-value of 0.242 is greater than the 5% level of significance. This means that the resiliency level does not affect the level purpose in life level of the respondents. Therefore Ho is accepted. Conclusions The researchers concluded the following based on the findings of the study: 1. Based on the result it can be concluded that the respondents mostly came from the nuclear family, composed of father, mother and children. But sometimes the same factors pressed them to live in the street, to experience physical abused and neglect in their home. They use substance to escape the reality and to relieve their hunger. The institution became their second home which gave them the chance to xi experience living in a healthy condition, their basic needs are given. It was also concluded that the greater part of the respondents only reached Grade 1, due to low economic status of their parents. 2. The result of Purpose in life test, clarifies that most of the respondents have definite purpose and meaning in life. It can be concluded that even though the respondents have been into hardships and traumatic experience, they were able to find purpose and meaning with the help of the institution and their own will to change for the better. It is also concluded that through the suffering experienced by the respondents they had survived by finding meaning in that experience. 3. The result of resiliency test indicates that most of the respondents were Resilient. It has been concluded most of the respondents were not resilient but would eventually become one. This is probably because the institution guided the children well and gave them all their needs, especially the unconditional love and acceptance which is very essential in the proper development of resiliency. 4. It has been concluded that there is no significant relationship between age and Purpose in Life Test score among the chosen participants. The researchers concluded that, age does not have significant role in the formation of persons purpose and meaning in their life as long as they are rich in experience, and are given their primary needs and sufficient love by the institutions xii 5. It has been concluded that there is no significant difference in the Purpose in life score of the respondents when they were grouped according to educational attainment. It can also be assumed that the educational attainment of the respondents does not affect their Purpose in Life Test score. The proponents of the research concluded that purpose in life is something rooted from the extensive repertoire that would manifest through the personal attributes and arise from fruitful experiences. 6. In view of the results, it can be gleaned and concluded that there is no significant difference in the Purpose in Life Test score of the respondents who belonged to the nuclear and extended families. Therefore, the type of family where the respondents belong to does not affect their Purpose in Life Test score. The authors concluded that since some of the respondents were not able to establish a strong relationship with their families at an early age, they chose to leave their dwellings. 7. The results revealed that there is no significant relationship between age and resiliency test score. This connotes that age does not affect the resiliency level of the participants. The researchers concluded that due to the traumatic experiences in the street, the respondents learned to overcome and cope up with their present situation using their innate resiliency, so whatever age the person is in, they can use and develop resiliency with the right combination of protective factor such as xiii problem-solving skills, social competence, supportive relationships, attentive and caring teachers, employment opportunities and availability of social services. 8. In view of the results it can be seen that there is no significant difference in their resiliency score when the respondents were grouped according to educational attainment. The researcher concluded that even though most of them only attained grade 1, it does not affect the respondent’s resiliency. Resiliency is a process, which does not only require knowledge but also experiences. The institution gave some protective factor such as love and acceptance which can balance the traumatic experiences. 9. The results obtained shows that there is no significant difference in the resiliency score of the respondents who belonged to the nuclear and extended families. The researchers concluded that the sheltered street children didn’t experience a good relationship with their families. However the institution provided a nurturing environment that helped them to recover from their harsh conditions. 10. In view of the results it can be seen that the null hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that in this specific study, purpose in life and resiliency had no direct relationship with each other since purpose in life is only one of the protective factors that made a person resilient. It will not create a strong relationship without the other protective factors xiv such as, attitudes, approaches, behaviors, and, perhaps, physiology that help people fare better during adversity and recover more quickly following it. Recommendations Based on the strong points and restriction of the study, the following are hereby recommended: The researchers would like to recommend to the government to take appropriate action regarding the unfortunate street children. Since children are the future of this country, the government should build more reliable institutions to lessen the number of street children that are exposed to illegal drugs. The researchers would like to recommend to the administrator of the institutions, as well as to the helping personnel (social worker, house parents, psychologist and teacher in charge) to educate the street children about their rights as children and as citizen of this nation. A program that would help them to become resilient enough for them to be able to overcome adversities leading to their decision to what path they would take into adulthood. xv The researchers would like to recommend to the people in community to learn about the issue. They should support organizations that are raising awareness, and providing a direct help to individual street children. To the future researchers who may wish to conduct the same study should explore more about resiliency and purpose in life. They should devote a longer time to be able to gain more knowledge about these two variables. The researchers also recommend to use female street children as a respondent since this study only focused on male street children. The researchers should also have more respondents to strengthen the result of the study. Lastly, patience and compassion are very important since one will be dealing with children under difficult circumstances.
