Abstract

As the child grows, there will be a lot of changes in him/her and these changes could also demand the parents to adjust their styles in parenting. With this in mind, the researchers were triggered to study the parenting styles as perceived by the eldest adolescents of University of Perpetual Help - Dalta System school year 2004-2005 and its relation to their emotional intelligent quotient. This study also aimed to distinguish differences among parenting styles. The researchers focused on the three key styles of parenting - authoritarian, authoritative and permissive. The descriptive method of research was utilized in gathering information from 378 students with age ranging from 12-21 years old as respondents collected through modal instant purposive sampling. The statistical tools used to understand the data gathered were the frequency distribution, percentage and chi-square. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that there's no significant relationship between parenting styles as perceived by the students and their emotional intelligence quotient in terms of emotional awareness, managing one's emotion, self-motivation, empathy, and coaching other's emotion.
