Abstract

From the results of this study, obtained after the treatment of the data, the following conclusions are draw. There is a moderate negative relationship (-.53) in the loneliness and social self-esteem of the students from different school environments. The modified coeducational school provides a more adequate school environment for students basing it from the high social self-esteem scores and low degree of loneliness. This finding contradicts the previous studies mentioned earlier since they showed that coeducational schools have a more favorable social milieu. The females obtained a higher social self-esteem than males which is contrary to the notion that males are considered to have a high self-esteem using Filipino values (Lynch, 1973). On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the loneliness scores between males and females. Regarding the interaction of the sex and school environment to the loneliness ad social self-esteem, the females from modified co educational school obtained the highest self esteem scores and the lowest degree of loneliness. Males from coeducational school, on the other hand, obtained the lowest social self-esteem and higher degree of loneliness. Finally, it can be generalized that loneliness is somewhat prevalent among the high school students as based from their mean scores. With these conclusions, it can be said that a high degree of loneliness could have possibly resulted from the type of school environment the students have as well as their interaction with the significant others in school. This shows that subjects value their school settings because of the satisfaction they get from their respective school environments. With these, the study is indeed significant to parents, counselors for they can serve to minimize the problem of loneliness in the homes or in schools. In the study of Philippine Psychology, this is just a pioneering study on loneliness which hopefully will encourage future researchers to study the concept in detail.
