Abstract

Abstract Controversies on the adoption issue have been long debated, whether adopted youth manifest disproportionate levels of psychological dysfunction compared with non-adopted youth. This study examined the rejection experiences of the adoptees, and their relationship towards their adoptive family. The central goal of this study was to ascertain how the adoptees‘ rejection experience affects their self-esteem. Grounded in the interpretive paradigm, the researchers conducted interviews with 7 adopted early adolescents ages 11- 14. The researchers determined that rejection can affect the adoptees‘ self-esteem in two ways, (1) how adoptees view the idea of rejection and (2) quality of relationship between adoptees and relatives. Most of the Adoptees in this study have a high self-esteem for they have a positive view of their adoption and also, most of the adoptees are adopted by a close friend or a relative. The findings of the current study extend the researchers' understanding of the adoptees‘ experience and of the communicative role of the adoptive family.
