Abstract

General The study aimed to determine the relationship concerns and coping strategies of male homosexual inmates who are located in Cavite Provincial Jail. B. Specific The study sought answers for the following problems: 1. What is the profile of respondents according to: 1.1 Name 1.2 Present Age 1.3 Age when Imprisoned 1.4 Cause of Imprisonment 1.5 Family Background 2. What are their relationship concerns? 2.1 Relationship with Authority 2.2 Relationship with Co-detainees 2.3 Relationship with Family 3. What are their coping strategies? Scope and Coverage: The researchers will focus on relationship concerns and coping strategies of male homosexual inmates who are located in Cavite, Philippines only. It is important to highlight the following restrictions. The study will be limited to determining the relationship concerns and coping strategies of the participants. This study will revolve around the stated variables and will focus on the issues that they have in their relationship concerns and their coping mechanisms. It will not cover the due process done during the investigation of the respondent’s case. Methodology: The researchers used descriptive research method in writing the study and non-probability sampling was used in deciding and choosing the respondents, specifically, the purposive sampling. The researchers formulated interview questions which are categorized into 4 subtopics. The first one is regarding to the relationship concerns of male homosexual inmates regarding to the authorities. The second is about their relationship concerns regarding to co-detainees, while the third one tackles their relationship concerns about their family. And the last but not the least is about their coping strategies that they used inside the prison. Major Findings: Based on the outcome of the study, the researchers have answered the questions originally posed, and the respective assumptions have been upheld. 1. Two out of three respondents committed drug abuse while the other one accused of raping. 2. The condition of the male homosexual inmates inside the jail affects the inmates’ behaviour, emotions and cognitive processes particularly their relationship with their family. 3. There are no relationship concerns regarding to the treatment of the authorities to the male homosexual inmates. Thus the system affects the personal interest and ability to raise their concerns directly to the authority. 4. There are no concerns regarding to their relationship to other detainees. However, it is hard for them to build rapport due to their fear of rejection and discrimination. 5. Respect is the most important factor that in establishing pleasant interpersonal relationship inside the Cavite Provincial Jail. 6. There are no relationship concerns raised regarding to their family but they serves as their emotional strength and weakness as well. 7. The male homosexual inmates are using Emotion-Focused Coping in dealing with stressful thoughts and facing their problems inside the jail. 8. With their restricted environment, the male homosexual inmates tend to divert their stress into a more productive and satisfying actions such as focusing on their sideline work, socializing with their co-detainees, and organizing events inside the Cavite Provincial Jail.
