Abstract

ABSTRACT Title: Altruistic Behavior of Jeepney Passengers of the Street Children of Congressional Road to Aguinaldo Highway of Dasmariñas City, Cavite. Authors: Bachoco, Jonnah P. Buyco, Ira Francesca R. Mojica, Gizelle T. Zantua, Pauline Joyce D. Funding Source: Parents Cost Php 7, 980 Date Started June 2012 Date Finished March 2013 Scope of the Study This study sought to describe the altruistic behaviors and the level of altruism among randomly selected jeepney passengers towards street children who beg for them. This study was conducted to 60 local jeepney passengers vi who regularly travel along Congressional Road to Aguinaldo Highway of Dasmariñas City, Cavite. A non-probability, specifically non-proportional quota sampling technique was used to obtain the research respondents. Methodology This study utilized naturalistic observation and self-formulated qualitative scale as research tools. Moreover, mixed method which includes qualitative and quantitative methods of research was used in the analysis of data. Major findings 1. Majority of the respondents obtained a moderate level of altruism. 2. Altruism in terms of giving money, mostly coins, leftover foods and drinks as well as encouraging their friends to give despite of the cost it may put on to them was observed. 3. Characteristics of situations influenced the strength of altruism. Conclusions The following conclusions were derived from the above mentioned findings. 1. In this new trend of begging, yet centuries-old altruism, it shows that the altruistic behavior and tendencies are visible among Filipino commuters. vii 2. As it is common for almost all of the respondents to be altruistic, it is also true that not everyone is. 3. As the respondents are altruistic, it was also shown that mostly give their left over which confuses the behavior if it is truly from the desire to help even if it involves a cost to the helper. Recommendations 1. DSWD and NGOs. Different institutions could find the study of great help. They could develop appropriate programs that could minimize the street children activity with regards to their begging. New techniques of begging reflect a greater need among the street children and interventions are to be created to decrease the said activities. 2. Future Researchers, specifically Psychology students. The study broadens the knowledge of future researchers regarding the subject Filipino altruism. Extensive studies regarding altruism in the Filipino context for both Filipino and foreign passengers through the use of social experiments and naturalistic observation are suggested. Comparisons regarding cultures could be formulated. Considering the socio-economic status, gender and age wider number of samples is suggested. It is well recommended to study the street children’s perception towards the passengers’ altruistic behaviours.
