Abstract

Abstract This study examined the difference between young adults coming from intact and separated parents with their attitude towards intimate relationship. Using a sample of 77 young adults, t-test of independent sample rejected the null hypothesis that parental marital status does not have a significant difference on young adults’ optimism and attitude. Results demonstrated that (a) respondents coming from an intact parent have a higher level of optimism regarding future relationship; (b) those who came from separated parent have a lower level on attitude towards marriage indicated by a more favorable attitude towards divorce; and (c) there is a significant difference in terms of optimism and attitude towards marriage between respondents coming from intact and separated parents. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding the influence of parental marital status on attitude towards intimate relationship in young adulthood.
