Del Mundo, Tricxie R. Espartero, Kristine P Quitoriano, Jonathan Eleazar P. Funding Source: Parents Costs: P10, 500.00 Date Started: June 2012 Date Finished: March 2013 Objectives of the Study: 1. What are the means scores of couples that have similar psychological birth order and couples that have dissimilar psychological birth order in terms of: 1.1marital satisfaction 1.2relationship belief De La Salle University - Dasmariñas iv 2. Is there a significant difference between couples who are homogeneous and heterogeneous in terms of: 2.1marital satisfaction 2.2relationship belief Scope and Limitation The participants of the study were limited to 60 couples. To achieve pertinent information, certain criteria were imposed. The couples qualified for sample selection must be married for at least five years and staying in the Municipality of Indang, Imus, Amadeo, Bacoor, Tanza and Dasmariñas, Province of Cavite. It is limited only to the influence of psychological birth order, psychological birth order combination and length of marriage. Significance of the Study The study was conducted to impart learning to various individuals. For unmarried couples, they can use this as an awareness to take into consideration the personality of their future partners in accordance to the descriptions of the personalities of people through their birth order as theorized by Adler. For married couples, they are more likely to understand the personality of their spouses and how this personality contributes to the marital satisfaction despite of the similarities and/or differences in the birth order through the results from this study based on the validated questionnaires that were given to them. For marriage and family counselors, they can use this study as one of their De La Salle University - Dasmariñas iv references, in handling and solving emotional and personality conflicts of the married couples for them to include the aspects of the psychological birth order as one of the factors of conflicts. For the field of Psychology, this study seeks to obtain additional and relevant information that could be used to build on existing frameworks and concepts particularly in the theory of Adler which is the Individual Psychology. For the future researchers, this study will help them especially who are interested also in studying of birth order and marital satisfaction and serve as reference in improving their study as well. Methodology Research Method The researchers used an explanatory, cross-sectional study wherein it attempts to answer whether the psychological birth order has a distinct relation to marital satisfaction as the kind of research design where the researchers are trying to test a theory about a phenomenon to explain how and why it operates. The researcher design of the study was quantitative, researchers used the nonprobability sampling particularly the purposive sampling that was limited to 60 participants. To compute the variables, the researchers used the Pearson‘s r. Findings 1. Both the homogeneous and heterogeneous couples exceeded their total mean scores beyond the cut-off score of the Dyadic Adjustment De La Salle University - Dasmariñas iv Scale which is 107. The homogeneous couples obtained the mean score of 108.96 and the heterogeneous couples obtained the mean score of 107.02. These mean scores suggest that both birth-pairings have well-adjusted relationships. 2. This study suggests that birth order and birth order combination has no significant difference on marital satisfaction and relation beliefs of the couples which support the hypothesis indicated that there is no significant difference in the marital satisfaction among the couples of different psychological birth order combination. Conclusion 1. Both the homogeneous and heterogeneous couples are well-adjusted in their relationship although the homogeneous couples scored a little higher and the belief that mindreading is expected is common on both heterogeneous and homogeneous couples which means that they expect their partners to sense all their moods and needs. 2. The relationship adjustment and relationship belief has no direct effect on both homogeneous and heterogeneous couples. Recommendations 1. For future researchers, they can continue this study and use a bigger number of respondents and a greater scope for the research setting. De La Salle University - Dasmariñas iv 2. They can also lengthen the criteria on how long the couples should be married before they can participate in this study. 3. They may also consider the age of the respondents and the gender preference. They can also use other test instruments to measure the marital satisfaction of the respondents. Doing the stated recommendations may or may not alter the results from this study. 4. The future researchers can also relate psychological birth order to other factors aside from marital satisfaction. It can be related to other forms of relationship, career satisfaction or academic performance. 5. They can also use and/or discover other psychological test instruments to measure psychological birth order aside from what was used in this study. 6. A bigger number of respondents may also help in gathering more accurate results from the study. 7. The unmarried and married couples may read this study and other related studies and/or articles to gain awareness and understanding on how personalities seen through psychological birth order may or may not affect their relationship. 8. The field of Psychology may also take this research into consideration as one of the study that may support and contradict the previous studies about psychological birth order. The studies may or may not be included in the citations in this research.
