Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Bagong Bayan, Dasmariñas City, Cavite Title: Experience of Resentment Among Elderly Gays from Their Family Members and from other People within the Area of Cavite Authors: Alvisor, Adrian M. De Leon, Al Louise H. De Luna, Cherrylyn B. Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 5,000 Date Started: June 2010 Date Finished: March 2011 Scope and Coverage: The study intended to identify the experienced resentment among old gays from their family members and from other people within the area of Cavite and its implication to their behavior, affect, action and cognition. The participants of the study were 10 old gays, with ages ranging from forty to seventy years old residing within the area of Cavite. Furthermore, it described the children in terms of the variables such as: age, religion, educational background, previous employment, previous residence and family background. They were selected based on the purpose of the study and regardless of their current location. Methodology: Snowball technique was used to select the respondents of the study. The researchers used Descriptive Case Study Research Design was used to gather data for the study. The interview was tape-recorded and transcribed. From the transcribed data, the respondent’s answers were tabulated and identified. Finally, summary and conclusions were made to address the objective of the study. Major Findings: 1. Generally, 100% of the respondents are independent and achievers because of the experiences and influences they had from their family and from other people. They earn from their work and their businesses that provide the needs of their family and for themselves. 2. Most of the respondents are still optimistic and satisfied with what they have in spite of the discriminations and resentment felt by them. 3. Fifty % of the respondents experienced physical resentment; 90 % experienced emotional resentment; and 80 % experienced verbal resentment. 4. Two of the respondents claimed regrets over being gay because of not having own family. 5. Not all families of the respondents had negative reactions to their gender because they are still responsible and can provide the needs of their family. Conclusions Based on the careful analysis of the data gathered, the following conclusions were drawn; 1. Being part of the homosexual community is not easy. With so much rejections, discrimination and resentment, homosexuals really suffer from the feelings of being different. 2. Not all parents are against gays. It could be hard for them to accept, but they are still responsible to guide them as their children. 3. Trials and hardships could make a person be more positive to life regardless of their gender identity. 4. Elderly gays are still like ordinary people with different personality and beliefs. They are the same with heterosexual people, suffering from so many difficulties and there is no way that they should not be valued. Every one deserves respect. 5. Family is the first responsible in raising a child on how they may view their lives. Recognizing the achievements and the effort are important factors to consider perceiving that they are still appreciated especially for the elderly gays that even if they are gay and old, the family and the society should not be very judgmental and need to questioned their capabilities and still should be given worthy of the trust. Recommendations From the data gathered, results, summary and conclusions made in this study the following recommendations were created: For the elderly gays. The study recommends that they voice out their suffering from discrimination and share their experiences of resentment. This could also be a way to better understand and consciously be aware of them. For the counsellors. The researchers also recommend the counsellors to note how old gays meet their financial and emotional needs especially in their retirement period. For the readers. The researchers recommend further understanding and giving of equal respect to the old gays not only within the area of Cavite but in the country as well. For the Family of Elderly Gays. The researchers recommend the family of the respondents to consider and recognize the achievement and accomplishments of the elderly gays. Future Researchers. The researchers recommend that future researchers examine the effects of these various types of rejection and resentment on elderly gays’ ability to develop and maintain future connection relationships with others in their social environment. Since the study focuses on the elderly male gays The future researchers may also study on the elderly female gays or lesbians that would certainly have different results in the said recommendation.
