Abstract

Scope and Coverage: This study sought to determine the marital satisfaction of the Blind Massage Therapist and their Normal Sighted Partner. There were 13 couples who participated in the study. Methodology: The researchers make use of Marital Satisfaction Inventory – Revised to test the level of marital satisfaction among couple respondents. The MSI-R is a revised measure of marital conflict and discord (Snyder, 1997). It is a self-report measure that identifies positive and potentially problematic dimensions within the relationship. Major Findings: 1. The blind respondents are highly satisfied when it comes to their marriage life compared to the sighted respondents. 2. The sighted respondents describe a fairly happy childhood and positive feelings toward their siblings and parents compared to the blind (male) respondents, who did not experience much in their childhood the way normal people did. 3. The blind (male) respondents are more traditional compared to the sighted (female) respondents. Moreover, the blind respondents believe that men should play the role of a good provider even if they are visually incapacitated; despite of their condition and limited resources. 4. The blind respondents (male) have better sexual satisfaction than their sighted (female) partners. Hence, the sighted respondents seek for more intimate gratification from their blind partner. 5. The sighted (female) respondents are capable of inflicting physical and non – physical harm to their blind spouses’. Since they are the ones who can see things, the sighted (female) respondents can easily throw something to their blind (male) spouse if they lose their temper. Moreover, the sighted (female) respondents could hurt their spouses’ feelings as they are more likely to harp on the shortcoming of their blind spouse. 6. The sighted (female) respondents are the ones who frequently complain about finances, since the sighted (female) respondents handle their family budget. This usually leads to misunderstanding between the couples because of the sighted partners’ complaints about their finances. 7. There is a significant relationship on the marital satisfaction of the blind respondents and the sighted respondents based on the four scales of marital satisfaction such as Conventionalization, Global Distress, Time Together and the Role Orientation. These are vital factors for the satisfaction of both blind and sighted respondents when it comes to their marriage. 8. There is a significant difference on the marital satisfaction of the blind respondents and the sighted respondents in terms of Global Distress, Affective Communication, Time Together and Role Orientation. Hence, these scales highly affect the relationship of the blind respondents and the sighted respondents. 9. Physical limitations such as visual impairment and other disabilities are not a hindrance for the marital satisfaction of a couple. Since, most of the respondents considered their married life successful and have a high level of marital satisfaction based on the MSI–R administered to them. Hence, if these extraordinary couple could make their relationship work, what more for the normal – sighted couples.
