Abstract

This study sought to determine the sexual and social roles among the selected members of Proud Immortals Lesbian Clan. There were a total of of nine (9) lesbian members who participated in the study. Methodology: The respondents were selected through a nonprobability sampling procedure known as purposive sampling. In this procedure, the researchers selected the participants to be included in the sample on the basis of expert judgment. The data were obtained from the interview of each respondent. Their answers were categorized accordingly to each research objectives. Also, the answers were transcribed and interpreted. Major Findings: 1. The respondents of the study are in their early twenties. They are all Roman Catholic except for AJ who is a Born-Again Christian. In terms of relationship status, 3 out of 9 are engaged in a relationship. 2. Based on the data gathered, most of the respondents realized that they discovered their sexuality when they were in elementary and high school, though two felt like they were born lesbians. Also, most of the respondents (five out of nine) categorized themselves as a femme, while the others are butch. The femme respondents admitted not having qualms wearing women’s clothing as opposed to the butch respondents who have a different taste in clothing. The preference of the respondents when it comes to their partner is the opposite of who they are. The femme is attracted to the butch and the butch is attracted to the femme. Almost all of the respondents (8 out of 9) said that they do not know why they prefer females over males. They do not try to look for the answer either; they just go with their feelings. All of the respondents have been in a relationship with the members of the same sex. The respondents’ attitude towards their sexuality is positive. They are open in expressing themselves and not ashamed of it. The study showed 5 out of 9 respondents consider themselves conservative when asked about their attitude towards sex. 3. The study showed that five out of nine (5 out of 9) respondents spend the majority of their time texting, surfing the net and chatting in chat rooms. They confessed that they encounter difficulties that include acceptance from the family, discrimination and acceptance in their community. Majority of the respondents stated that their family’s first reaction was shock when they came out of the closet. The respondents claimed that the treatment that they get in the work place regarding their sexual identity are mostly positive. Respondents said that they expect to be treated fairly and with respect regardless of their sexuality. Based on the study, the five respondents who are employed are helping to ease household expenses. Most of the lesbian (8 out of 9) respondents are active especially involving their Proud Immortals clan. They engage in various events and outreach programs such as Sagip Kapamilya whom they had a partnership recently. Conclusion The following conclusions were drawn based on the findings of the study. 1. Based on the abovementioned results, the researchers conclude that the members of Proud Immortals Clan are young adult butch and femme lesbians. Lesbians of this clan have engaged in a relationship with the same sex at some point in their lives. Most lesbians discovered their sexuality at early adolescence. Lesbiansim could also be influenced by someone who is a great part of their daily lives. Lesbians do not differ from heterosexuals in terms of how they recognize attraction. However, they do not have an answer for why they prefer females over males. Some feel that it is natural for them to be that way and they do not question the matter. 2. Lesbians have an optimistic attitude towards their sexuality. In other words, they are very open about their sexual orientation. Though at times, they can easily shut down about their sexuality if they feel that their character is threatened. It can also be concluded that lesbians tend to satisfy their own sexual needs than suppress it. 3. The Lesbians still face discrimination despite of the many years that have gone by since open homosexuality began. The parents of the lesbians get a feeling of shock and disappointment after knowing that their child is a member of the third-sex; hence, some lesbians choose to keep their sexuality a secret from their family members. Nonetheless, lesbians of this generation are now confident in having their presence known in the workplace despite of the discrimination. Most of the lesbian members are active people, not only in their clans, but they try to reach out to their communities. Recommendation With the findings of the study, the researchers have come up with the following recommendations: 1. Studies about lesbians will be a good way to identify the factors or situations that lead to their sexual and social roles. 2. Psychological tests and additional investigation concerning the respondent’s background could be done. 3. Research about the sexual and social roles of lesbians involved in a clan will be interesting and informative at the same time in relation to the development of lesbianism in the 21st century. 4. Future researchers could conduct a study on lesbians who are in late adulthood for different results. 5. Psychology professors could use this research to explain the feelings and thoughts of lesbians. The topic might be in good use for them to be able to fully understand and be responsive to do behaviors attributed by these individuals. 6. For the lesbians not to be discouraged on the opinions and criticisms of other people. Among everyone, they are the ones who fully understand the nature of their identity. 7. For Guidance Counselors, they should be conscious and attentive to the new trends that the behaviors of these individuals might be different from others. 8. Future researchers could do a follow-up interview and female interviewers are recommended for more precise answers from the respondents. 9. It is recommended that this research could be replicated with a different set of respondents (eg. professional lesbians) to cater particular roles as discussed in the study. 10. Future researchers are also advised to participate in the clan-gatherings for further investigation.
