Abstract

The study identified the learning competency of students with ADHD when multisensory approach was used, particularly the visual-tactile, auditory-tactile and visual auditory. The participants of the study are three children diagnosed with ADHD with the ages 13,14 and 15 years old. Methodology: Purposive Sampling was used to select the respondents of the study and used case study as research design. The researchers used the respondents case history to further know their disability. An interview guide was used to know the difficulties encountered by the participants. Observational rating scale and teacher made test were employed to measure the learning competency after exposure to multisensory approach. Major Findings: 1. There are different cases of students with ADHD and it should be met with an appropriate learning approach. 2. Students with ADHD also encountered difficulty - in personal, academic and social area - given their condition. The special education teachers have a big part for them to become better learners. 3. Upon introducing them to the three multisensory approaches, the results of their teacher made test show that their learning competency increased in visual-tactile approach while, the visual-auditory became an effective approach when the observational rating scale was used. The two measurements shows that students with ADHD are learning visually and interested in any visual related materials. Conclusions: Based on the careful analysis of the data gathered, the following conclusions are were drawn; 1. Students have different profiles when diagnosed with ADHD but all of them are inattentive, and have their own ability to learn. Thus it is a challenge for their school teachers to get the attention of their students with ADHD. 2. Each child has unique characteristics and behaviors and a child with ADHD is special and needs proper care and attention. With proper guidance and assistance they can have a better future and learn things in school like normal children. 3. Learning competency of students with ADHD could be developed with the use of any visual related material. They could adapt to a lesson easily by reading or watching it. Recommendation: Based on the data gathered the following recommendations are offered: Future Researchers. May have more participants to really see the difference and for comparison of the results. They should also have to secure the absence of extraneous variables while conducting the study such as noise that could disturb the class. They may introduce appropriate multisensory approach to other students with learning disability. SPED...Administrators....Should encourage their special educators to use multisensory approach in teaching students with ADHD, they should use any visual related materials so it would be easier for them to get their attention and to control the hyperactivity of their students. Special Education Teachers. Showed to explore new approaches for their students. The researchers recommend implementing the approach which uses any visual related material that would really catch the attention and develop the learning competency of students with ADHD. Parents of students with ADHD. Should continue teaching their son/daughter using visual related materials for their child to easily adapt and enhance learning competency.. Students with ADHD. Should know what approach is more effective way for them to learn so that they could easily understand their lesson in the class.
