Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Resiliency Among Elderly in Selected Institutions Authors: Elora Marice P. Elemento Angela Grace S. Fabrigaras Kristine L. Galve Jennifer A. Samonte Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 12,000 Date Started: June 2008 Date Ended: February 2009 Objectives of the Study General To determine the level of resiliency of the elderly in selected institutions Specific 1.) What is the profile of the respondents in the study according to: • Age • Gender - 4 - • Civil status • Educational attainment • Number of years of abandonment/ living in the institution • Number of children 2.) What are the major problems that the respondents went through before they were institutionalized? 3.) What is the level of resilience among the respondents in terms of: • Emotional • Social • Mental Scope and Limitation This study is designed to determine the level of resiliency in terms of emotional, social, and mental spheres of abandoned elderly. The elderly whose ages range from 60 years old and above who have the capacity to comprehend and answer questionnaires and who have stayed in the institution for at least three years were considered as respondents. Researchers focus on selected institution in Tahanan ni Maria in Carmona, Cavite and House of Somang in Parañaque City. Methodology The researchers used descriptive design employing the survey method to know the problems that elderly encounter and their level of resiliency. Forty-One (41) elderly in Tahanan ni Maria and House of Somang - 5 - and have been institutionalized for at least one (1) year were the respondents of the study. The researchers utilized a Personal Information Sheet to know the Demographic Profile of the respondents, Fifteen (15) item test which measures the Resiliency of the respondents and a self-made interview guide to know their implications. Findings: 1. Majority of the respondents is ages 71-75; most of them are female. According to Bee (1987), women live longer than men do; there are several possible reasons for this: women have greater immunity to diseases, women’s work may expose them less to environmental hazards and they appear to seek medical attention earlier in any illness, improving chance of cure. The related literature supports the data. In relation to the said statement, a large proportion of the respondents are widowed. The population is aging and because wives’ life expectations are increasing more rapidly than husbands’, even greater numbers of widows are likely to be in the institutions in the future (Santrock, 1999). Most of the respondents did not reached college level due to financial problems. Only a few have stayed in the institution for more than three years. Nursing home patients face an increased risk of dying sooner than they otherwise would because of failure to diagnose and treat illnesses (Vander Zanden ,1978). The respondents have 0-2 children, for the reason that majority of them are widowed and single. 2. The interview guide reveals that the respondents encountered financial problems before being institutionalized. Majority of them surpassed the problems. The respondents overcame these problems through spirituality. They saw their past experiences as a natural part of life. 3. Most of the respondents are highly resilient in the three aspects (mental, emotional, and social). Like children, they are also able of overcoming their problems. According to Carbonell et. Al (1998), children who experience significant adversity has received a good deal of attention. Resilient factors have been put forth as explanations as to why certain adolescents do well in the face of adversities whereas others who undergo the same experiences succumb to stress. Even if they had different experiences in their lives, elderly can still prevail. Conclusion: In the light of the findings, the following conclusions were drawn from the study: 1. The profile of the respondents reveals that most of them are female, are in the later stage of development; majority of them are widowed, attained high school level, have 0 to two children, and have been residing in the institution for one to three years. 2. The results from the researcher-made interview guide show that most of the respondents experienced financial implications which led to their institutionalization. They encountered the same typical problems as those elderly outside the institution. 3. The respondents were mostly resilient. From the gathered data, the majority of the respondents are highly resilient despite being left by their family. They are still able to surpass the adversity from earlier in their lives. Recommendation Upon collecting the findings and conclusion, the researchers recommend the following: 1. The administration of Tahanan Ni Maria and the House of Somang should continue to provide more activities and encourage the elderly to participate in these activities about spiritual empowerment such as bible readings or bible studies, or any other religious rituals to maintain the resiliency of the elderly. In addition, the administration should address the elderly’ financial problems and possibly seek help from the government for support. 2. To those readers in late adulthood, they should be aware of the following stage in their life and should possibly consider the positive circumstances of residing in a home-for-the-aged institution in order to maintain high resiliency. In conclusion, they should maintain a positive outlook in life despite of the adversities. 3. The future researchers should continue or pursue studies regarding “Resiliency among elderly in selected institutions” for more extensive results and a better understanding of this concept. To furthermore add to the study, researchers should broaden this concept in-depth through different methods and instruments. 4. The De La Salle University- Dasmariñas should have a sense of awareness in helping elderly, specifically those in home-forthe- aged institutions, in providing outreach programs or activities which will cater to the elderly interests.
