Abstract

ABSTRACT NAME OF INSTITUTION: De La Salle University-Dasmarinas ADDRESS: Dasmarinas, Cavite 4115 TITLE: Perceptions on and terms of negotiating Sexual harassment among Selected GROs in Cavite City AUTHOR: Arfel Jean P. Reyes FUNDING SOURCES: Parents RESEARCH COSTS: P2500 DATE STARTED: June 2007 DATE COMPLETED: March 2008 This study aims to know the perception and terms of negotiating of the Selected GROs in Cavite City about Sexual harassment. Purposely, the study answered the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, educational attainment, marital status and length in working as GRO? 2. What are the perceptions on sexual harassment among selected GROs in Cavite City? 3. What are the ways in negotiating different types of sexual harassment among selected GROs in Cavite City? 4. What are the implications of their perceptions and ways of negotiating sexual harassment to their lives? The research method used was descriptive method and a case study since the said study need to have an in-depth analysis of the data that will be gathered. Each respondent were able to share their own views or perceptions about sexual harassment. They also shared some experiences that the researcher was able to use for his analysis. Thus, they provide information that was useful for the said study. On the other hand, the respondents gave examples in terms of negotiating sexual harassment. It was use to strengthen more the researchers’ gathered data and information. The open ended questions were being answered fruitfully by the respondents. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS/CONCLUSION The conclusions were made based from the obtained data: 1. The respondents reached secondary education but no one among them reached tertiary education. Only one respondent finished high school. Though almost all of them had dreams to finish their study. 2. Almost the entire respondents had serious relationship before but only one of them still married until now. They also identified themselves as single mother to their children. 3. The respondents perceived sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors and taking advantage of her body. This was base on their past experiences and until now to their customers. 4. They handle sexual harassment by letting it go, resisting their customers act towards them, like by simply holding the hands of their customers wherever it goes. Meanwhile, all the respondents will do any thing as long as their customers were generous. Still, some respondents handled sexual harassment by inventing stories especially if their customer was not generous. On the other hand, if their customer was generous, they make their customer feel at home and caressed them in order to come back again. 5. All the respondents had different implications regarding their lives now from having positive outlook in life, to see that life is hard, to have negative feelings and finally losing hope already. RECOMMENDATION The following recommendations were drawn from the data gathered: 1. To society that they must try to show to the GROs that they are well-accepted in our community and we must never degrade them. 2. For the government institutions that they must make sure that young girls will not become uneducated, in order there will be no uneducated girls who will sell their bodies in bars. Also, to try to have a seminar about sexual harassment because it seems that sexual harassment is still a loose concept for the women until now. 3. To those future researchers that they must try to conceptualize more concepts about sexual harassment especially to women and topics regarding GROs by using the said study. 4. To health workers that they must make sure that those girls whom they check-up weekly or monthly were being free from all kinds of disease that they can get from their work. 5. For the owners of clubs that they must not abuse those girls especially those underage to work for them. Also, to give the exact amount that the GROs earned for that night. 6. To the families and friends of GROs that they must be aware where their daughters work and whatever happens, they must not allow their daughters to sell their bodies. Moreover, for their friends that they must be the one who must speak out since they are the one who really knew the real attitude of their friend. 7. For the readers that they must still appreciate the GROs instead of degrading them or to say bad words at them since they did not really know the real attitude or personality of those GROs. 8. For the students that they must appreciate whatever they had right now. They have to realize that they are lucky that they were able to study and finish their study since education was very important for us to have a good paying job. 9. Lastly, for the GROs that they must not stop to dream and not to lose hope that they can escape in that kind of world.
