Scope and Limitation This study will be dealing with the inquiry on the discrimination experiences in relation to the self-esteem among the Mangyans in Occidental Mindoro. The main focus of this study covers only the Iraya Mangyan affected by the dominant lowlanders. This study will also deal with the Mangyan’s demographic profile in terms of age, sex and position in tribe, The number of respondents is limited to 10 Iraya Mangyans, 2 from grade school ages (9-12) male and female, 2 from teenagers ages (14-17) male and female, 2 from parents ages (27-30), 2 from elders ages (60 & above), 2 from the leaders in tribe. The prevailing emotions of the Iraya Mangyans with regards to the discrimination experiences brought by the lowlanders, how these discrimination experiences affect the Iraya mangyan’s in terms of self-esteem, and the implication of these discrimination experiences to the lives of Iraya Mangyans. Methodology The researchers used phenomenology in this research to examine discrimination experiences in relation to the self-esteem through a detailed description and analyzation of Iraya Mangyans in Occidental Mindoro. Purposive sampling was used in selecting the respondents of this study. The researchers prepared an interview guide to facilitate their dialogue with the co-researchers and recorded it using a Video Camera. After transcribing the interview with the Iraya Mangyans, the researchers wrote their narratives. They used it in representing their thematic insights that brought them to their first level of reflection. After that, the researchers brought the narratives into the second level of reflection. Using the narratives and the thematic insights drawn from the first and second reflections, the researchers now constructed the eidetic insight. Lastly, the researchers met up with their seven co-researchers individually to validate their findings. Major Findings 1. The demographic profile particularly the age and their position in the tribe does affect how lowlanders discriminate them. Regardless of age and position in the tribe cannot avoid being discriminated. 2. The co-researchers experienced various kinds of discriminations like received deception, insults and teasing, experienced distancing, didn’t get the chance to enjoy free services, being forced to leave their own land, and paid unreasonably in doing business. These affect them as a person, which lowers their self-esteem. 3. The implication of discrimination experiences to their social relationship is that they become timid, fearful, avoidant, thinks that there is no way to achieve equality and lastly consider their self as ignorant or imbecile. These characteristics have a huge impact on their personality and to have low self-esteem. Conclusion 1. Regardless of age, sex, position in the tribe the co-researchers are experiencing discrimination from the lowlanders which affects them to have low self-esteem. 2. The co-researchers received negative experiences from the lowlanders which created negative effects in their relationship to the lowlanders. 3. The negative experiences of the Mangyans from the lowlanders have formed negative implications to their personalities. 4. They confessed that they have negative emotions towards the lowlanders due to the discrimination experiences they recieve. 5. Some of the co-researchers believed that not all of the lowlanders are treating them bad and not all are causing them harm. 6. Some of the mangyans are hoping that someday Mangyans and Tagalogs will live together peacefully. Recommendations 1. For the Iraya Mangyans, who experiencing discrimination that they continue to share their stories to be an eye opener to others. 2. For the lowlanders, they must be mindful and respectful with regards to the feeling of the Iraya Mangyans. 3. For the government, they must have programs especially for the Mangyans not only the Iraya for them to be educated about their rights and importance in the society. 4. For future researchers could extort more ideas based on the said subtopic to have deeper understanding on the whole discrimination experiences of the co-researchers. 5. For future researchers, they could also broaden the limit of their setting. With this, they will be able to have a more comprehensive investigation on the topic.
