Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of the Institution: De La Salle University Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: ETV Programs as Teaching Strategy: Its Effectiveness on the Performance in English, Mathematics and Science Subjects. Author: Donnalyn L. Dizon, Fey Aldrich M. Miranda Funding Source: Personal/ Parents Cost: P10, 000 Date Started: June 13, 2008 Date Completed: March 15, 2009 Statement of the Problem: 1. What are the mean scores of the control and experimental groups in English, Mathematics and Science tests? 2. Is there a significant difference in the posttest scores between the control and experimental groups? 3. Is there a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores of Control and Experimental groups? Hypothesis: Ho: There is no significant effect on the poor performer students of Dasmariñas II Central School, Burol I, Dasmariñas, Cavite that Educational TV programs as teaching strategy can help the students to learn and perform them well. Scope and Delimitation: The researchers focused on the effectiveness of ETV programs as teaching strategy for the poor academic performer students of Dasmariñas II Central School, Burol I, Dasmariñas, Cavite with the Grade Point Average of 80 and below to their major subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Science. From the 100 participants in the pretest the participants declined to 80 participants in the posttest. By this, the 50 participants for the pretest belonging to the control group received no treatment, decreased to 35 participants by the time of administration of posttest in English, Mathematics, and Science subjects. However, the experimental group, who received the treatment, had 50 participants for the pretest, decreased to 47 participants by the time of administration of the posttest with the same subjects. For both conditions, the sessions were finished in one day but it was originally to be held every other day, due to the request of the school to have the schedule moved, leaving the researchers less time to run the experiment. Summary of Findings: On the basis of gathered data and information by the researchers, the following were revealed. 1. Pretest and posttest administered were a good assessment on the academic performance of Grade IV pupils of Dasmariñas II Central School, Burol I, Dasmariñas, Cavite. ETV programs can greatly represent and aid the observational learning of the participants. 2. There was a significant effect on the academic performance, specifically the posttest scores of Grade IV pupils of Dasmariñas II Central School, Burol I, Dasmariñas, Cavite, when they were given treatment, which are Educational TV programs as part of their subjects. The scores of the experimental group had projected a big difference implying a high increase in scores and a big improvement in their academic performance. 3. There was no significant effect on the academic performance, specifically the posttest score in English and Science subjects of Grade IV students of Dasmariñas II Central School, Burol I, Dasmariñas, Cavite while the Mathematics subject showed that the pretest and posttest scores had a big difference even though there was no treatment provided to the participants. There could have been other factors to be considered. Conclusion: Based on the careful analysis of the data, there was a significant difference between the scores of no treatment and with treatment. For the experimental group, increase in mean scores was primarily due to the Educational TV programs such as Epol Apple, Mathinik and Sineskwela given to the students specifically. The probable reason that might have affected the performance of the pupils was having a third to five times experience of conducting ETV programs to their classroom. However, the control group lessened their interest to the task because they were not interested to the acting teacher, who is one of the researchers. This can be ascribed to the decrease of mean scores of the group. The scores were lower because there were no ETV programs as treatment for them. On the other hand, the control group of the Mathematics subject had another factor that affected the performance of the participants which is their being more active and more interesting to the Mathematics subject even though there was no treatment provided for them. The researchers conclude that the role of Educational TV programs had proven to be a great influence on the academic performance, particularly the posttest scores of Grade IV pupils of Dasmariñas II Central School, Burol I, Dasmariñas, Cavite. ETV programs increased the response of the pupils as shown by the improved scores of posttest given to the experimental group. Educational TV programs create a very revealing power to the participants to be more active and to be more interested in their subjects. Having ETV programs as part of their academic habit determined the change in the behavior of the participants concerning their study habits that led them to an outstanding academic performance. Recommendation: After a careful view of the findings, these recommendations are presented. 1. Validity of test to be checked see the effect of treatment on the academic performance must be noted. 2. Initial observations on the behavior of the pupils and data gathering on the background of the participants, particularly, previous grades and academic performance must be performed to support numerical data. 3. A longer period of time for more reliable effects of the treatment used is strongly recommended.
