Abstract

GENERAL The focus of the study is to determine the levels of Emotional Literacy of 30 selected senior criminology students of De La Salle University – Dasmariñas and its implication to their future career as criminologists. B. SPECIFIC 1. What is the Emotional Literacy of the selected Senior Criminology Students of DLSU-D in terms of Emotional Self Awareness, Emotional Expression and Emotional Awareness of Others? 2. What is the implication of the respondents’ Emotional Literacy profile to their future career as criminologists? SCOPE AND DELIMITATION The study focuses on the measurement of emotional literacy of 30 selected fourth year criminology students of DLSU-D in terms of emotional self-awareness, emotional expression and emotional awareness of others as measured by emotional literacy test derived from the EQ map. METHODOLOGY The researchers utilized the Emotional Literacy Test derived from the EQ map, it was used to evaluate the respondents’ Emotional Literacy divided into three aspects, which are emotional self-awareness, emotional expression and emotional awareness of others. Upon the results of the tests administered, mean scores were gathered and computed so as every aspect is evaluated. RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY The respondents for the study were 30 fourth year criminology students of DLSU-D, selected randomly through the technique of convenience sampling. CONCLUSION Based on the facts gathered and findings from the Emotional Literacy Test, the researchers concluded the following: 1. More than half of the respondents or 52 percent to be exact are at the vulnerable level in their Emotional Self Awareness, this implies that the ability to notice and label their feelings is unsteady and may vary from situation to situation. Beyond half of the Senior Criminology Students are at the vulnerable level in their Emotional Expression, It means that this aspect is unbalanced and irregular in the ability to voice-out and utter the emotions for others to know. Sixty percent of the respondents were at the Proficient level in the aspect of Emotional Awareness of others, This signifies effectiveness and creativity in sensing and evaluating the feelings and emotions of others in normal situations and even when in under pressure. 2. The respondents are suitable in their future careers as criminologists in the sense that attaining a high score in the aspect of Emotional Awareness of others is an important factor in dealing with other people. It is basically needed and a part of their work, considering that most of their jobs are in the police force, prison service and probation service which often involve stressful and demanding conditions . The data presented in the Emotional Literacy Profile will be very useful for the development of suitable training and therapeutic programs for the respondents, so they can satisfactorily fulfill the requirements of their future job. RECOMMENDATION Criminology Students and Institutions. The proponents would suggest further studies be made in relation to the Emotional Intelligence of criminology students. The pursuance of the said topic would be valuable in the sense that more information will be gathered and will help recognize the importance of Emotional Intelligence in the future professions of these students as criminology graduates. In addition, in engaging in further studies about the topic, ideas can be summed up for emotional intelligence tests that can suit best for the students and their institutions. People in the Society. It is always expected from law enforcers to understand and cater the needs and complaints of people. The researchers think it is about time for people to take turn to understand that the duties and responsibilities of law enforcers are not easy, and that it poses great emotional and psychological demands. Let us recognize the weight of the job’s emotional requirements and take it upon ourselves reciprocate their empathy and understanding of our needs. Future Researchers. The researchers recommend the employment of additional standardized psychological tools to assess the EQ of the respondents. This will provide further interpretations and insights regarding the topic. Also, widening the respondent sample to include not just students but professional law enforcers as well would add interesting and useful data for the research. Another suggestion is to examine EQ vis-à-vis possible correlates such as age, IQ, length of service, and sex.
