Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of the institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: To Live or Not to Live: Purpose in Life among Teenage Male Gays with Suicidal Ideation Authors: Beri, Norife D. Espiritu, Ma. Carolina B. Leaban, Emelyn Pacupac, Joanna R. Funding Source: Parents Cost: 12, 000 Date Started: June 2007 Date Completed: February 2008 Objective of the Study: A. General Objectives To know the purpose in life of teenage male gays with suicidal ideation and identify the different causes that lead teenage male gays to suicidal ideation. B. Specific 1. To know the Demographic Profile of the teenage male gays through their age, religion, educational attainment and ordinal position to identify its relation to suicidal ideation. 2. To identify the factors that make teenage male gays lead to suicidal ideation in terms of self esteem, relationship with the family and relationship with other people. 3. To determine the indicators of suicidal ideation of teenage male gays as manifested in cognitive and behavioral domain. 4. To distinguish the Purpose in Life among teenage male gays with suicidal ideation. C. Scope and Delimitation The researchers’ concern in this study was to know the demographic profile and purpose in life of thirty (30) teenage male gays ages 13 to 18 who have suicidal ideation from selected places in Cavite. x After the computed raw scores, the researchers came up to nine (9) participants who underwent the unstructured interview. D. Method The researchers used the descriptive case study as a method of gathering data. Participants’ ages 13-18 years old were selected through snowball sampling. Researchers gave their participants the Demographic Profile Index and Purpose in Life Test to identify if the selected participants had suicidal ideation. After the participants were identified having suicidal ideation, they underwent interview. After the participants were interviewed, the researchers identified if the participants lack clear meaning and purpose in life, indecisive range/uncertain definition of purpose in life, and definite meaning and purpose in life through Purpose in Life Test. E. Major Finding 1. Teenage Male Gays with suicidal lack a clear meaning and uncertain definition of purpose in life. xi 2. Results show that the major problem of these teenage male gays with suicidal ideation is their relationship with their family. F. Conclusion 1. The researchers found out that most of the qualified participants are gay adolescents aged 13-18 years old, catholics, high-school graduates and undergraduates and are eldest in the family. 2. The researchers concluded that social isolation and discrimination are the main problems of teenage male gays in our society. 3. The researchers concluded that self-esteem, especially relationship with family and relationship with other people, greatly affect the teenage gays on how they view their lives. 4. The researchers found out that the feeling of emptiness, despair, confusion and loafness are the cognitive indicators of suicidal ideation of teenage male gays, while, the feeling of boredom and painfulness and depression are the behavioral indicators of suicidal ideation of teenage male gays. 5. The researchers concluded that having a clear understanding on the Purpose in Life is important to the teenage male gays who have high level of suicidal ideation. G. Recommendation 1. Teenage Male Gays. This study could help them be aware and be knowledgeable enough in thinking possible ways not to be counted among the gays. 2. Families. This research could help them to be open-minded, supportive and to willingly accept the teenage gays, and for them to understand the factors that make teenage gays think of suicide. 3. Friends and Peers of Teenage Male Gays. This study may help them be aware of every situation that teenage gays go through and for them to understand and accept the life of all teenage gays.
