Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University- Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Generativity Versus Stagnation: Implication of Psychosocial Crisis to the Volunteerism of Gawad Kalinga Beneficiaries in Brgy. Aguado, Trece Martires City Authors: Obnamia, Kahren O. Reyes, Arlene M. Funding Source: Parents Cost: P 8,000 Date Started: August 2007 Date Submitted: March 2008 Objectives of the Study: Generally, this research was conducted to determine the psychosocial crisis among midlife Gawad Kalinga beneficiaries of GK Aguado Site, Brgy. Aguado, Trece Maritirez City. Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondent in terms of: a. age b. sex c. number of children d. occupation e. number of years stayed at GK site ii 2. What are the psychosocial crises experienced by midlife Gawad Kalinga beneficiaries? 3. What are the implications of these psychosocial crises factors in the aspects of midlife years in: a. family b. marriage c. work d. community 4. What are the implications of these psychosocial crises among midlife to their volunteerism? Scope and Delimitation of the study This study focused only on the psychosocial crisis during middle adulthood according to Erik Erikson which is generativity versus stagnation. This study only covered the internal and external factors that affect the psychosocial development of the participants. The aspects of life where the participants may practice generativity were limited only to work, family, marriage and community. All the data used were taken from the GK beneficiaries belonging to GK Aguado Site and they do not necessarily reflect the psychosocial crisis among other GK beneficiaries of the other GK sites around Cavite or around the country. The span of time of the study only covered a limited period of months enough to gather all the data needed for the interpretation of the study. Methodology The study employed the method of descriptive research that particularly made use of the survey technique and interview to draw information from the participants concerning their psychosocial dimensions. In this research, thirty (30) GK beneficiaries who were all in their midlife years (40-60 years old) of GK Aguado Site were the participants. Purposive sampling was employed in the selection of the participants, wherein the participants were selected randomly using the following criteria: (1). the participants age’s ranges from 40-60 years; (2). they are part of the Gk community for at least 2 years. Procedures were done accordingly to gather all the necessary data for this study. Conclusions The following were the findings derived from this study: 1. Age, sex, occupation and number of years stayed at GK site were necessary factors which may affect the possibility of experiencing psychosocial crisis. While number of children may not affect it at all. 2. In terms of the psychosocial crisis experienced by midlife Gawad Kalinga beneficiaries, the internal crisis that they were experiencing is greater than the external crisis. 3. There were greater positive implications of psychosocial crises in the aspects of midlife years in terms of family, marriage, work and community compared to the negative implications. 4. Most of the GK beneficiaries in their midlife years still enjoy volunteering themselves most of the time. The psychosocial crisis that they were experiencing does not stop them from extending care to others aside from self. Recommendations Based on the findings derived from this study, the following are hereby recommended. 1. Future researchers may consider other variables in the demographic profile that may affect the possibility of having psychosocial crisis like educational attainment and financial status of the participants. 2. Future researchers may create a better and more specific standardized psychosocial crisis test to be able to describe the crisis in a deeper view. It is also better to consider the number of items in the category of internal and external crisis for a more valid and reliable source. 3. Future researchers may also consider other aspects of life during middle years aside from family, work, marriage and community which may also contribute to the probability of experiencing these crises. 4. Future researchers may also focus on the other variables aside from psychosocial crisis that may have the same or different implication to the volunteerism of those who are in their middle years. 5. Future researchers may also explore with this study using Case Study method which involves an in-depth examination of the topic which may provide a systematic way of looking at this event, collecting data, analyzing information and reporting its results.
