Abstract

In this study, the researchers focused on the level of hope’s relationship to coping strategies of fathers of children with autism. As categorized by Snyder, hope is limited only to three types namely: pathway thinking, agency thinking and the overall hope level, while coping strategies is limited only to the two gener al types of coping namely: problem - focused coping and emotion - focused coping. This study made use of the descriptive correlational type of research as it attempts to determine the levels of hope and coping strategies possessed by the fathers of children with autism and to know the relationship between the two variables. The researchers used the Adult Hope Scale questionnaire, a Coping Inventory questionnaire and self - made interview on selected participants about hope and coping strategies as research instru ment. The researchers computed the correlation of the two variables using the Pearson r. The result indicated that the respondents obtain ed a high score in emotion - focused coping but low level of hope. Therefore, the researchers conclude d that there is no significant relationship between the coping strategies and levels of hope of fathers having a child diagnosed with autism. In light of the present study, the researchers suggest that a further analysis be carried out based on the present data obtained . Keywords: hope, coping strategies, pathway, agency, problem focused, emotion focused, fathers, children and autism
