Abstract

Given that the Philippines is a culture-centered country, pornography has not yet been given a clear description in Filipino society. Feminism, as defined in the Philippines is the state of women having rights and choices equal to men. Since Filipinos nowadays are influenced by western concepts, digging deeper meaning and understanding about pornography from Filipino feminists through the aid of Social Representation Theory could identify the real definition of pornography in Philippine context. Interviews and open-ended surveys from progressive feminists and feminist students were the sources of information to determine the representation of pornography in the Philippine society through thematic analysis. Common concepts found in the data were exploitation, objectification, victimization, negative connotation of liberation and the corroded values of the Filipinos when it comes to pornography. Thus, two social representations were formed: first, Pornography as degradation and restraint for women; and second, Pornography as a disapproved topic in Philippine culture and religion. The results show that pornography in the Philippines is not just portrayals of people being nude; it varies with the Filipino’s beliefs, women’s right, consensus, sexuality, and age appropriateness.
