Abstract

The general aim of this study is to find out the experiences of pubescent sons with an absent father due to migration. The findings show unique qualities that are present in the three participants. This includes the feeling of competency in academic performance even where there is lack of motivation and discipline. The children get good grades in school and become more persistent in finishing their studies when they realized the reason why their fathers need to work abroad. They became self motivated to do well, aspired higher and became competent in academics. The second is being accustomed to the absence. The three participants get used to the absence of their fathers and doing so has become their way of acceptance and making most of the situation. As time passes, they also learned how to divert their attention to other things. The third unique quality is learning to be independent. They became adjusted socially, mainly because of the social support from family members and relatives. The three participants open themselves to advices that help them solve any of their issues and because of that they became socially adjusted and optimistic. In the light of the findings the researchers came up with the recommendations for healthy discipline along with love and nurturing, which are essential ingredients to a child-mother relationship while the father is away. Mothers should have more quality time for their children and more attention must be given to the children for them to have motivations. Guidance and moral support are also important, Mother and other members of the family should work hand in hand with everything and anything in their child’s life for better growth. Even though living without a father, it is important to show and make pubescent children realize how important it is to have an involved father that can guide them at times that they face the incompleteness of family especially on special occasions and when they needed a father figure to guide them on certain decisions they want to make.
